Finally got an afternoon of hunting in. Geez my hunt time has dwindled this year. ???

I hit a strange park where 6" of fill dirt can make an appearence at any time and at anywhere. I dug a screwcap in excess of 12" here last year. Funny thing was... that I dug deep mercs on both sides of the fill strip?? The fill literally shows up all over the place and it gets very annoying. :tongue3:

Less than 5 minutes into the hunt I got a deepie signal and it repeated everywhere. It was a no brainer silver hit that had just simply been walked over becuse of the depth.
I called over the my buddy...then dug a deep 8" plug. I ran the probe and sure enough...same nice silver hit. After diggin another 2"+ more dirt out of the way...I saw the glint of silver. I was thinking seated since he had just popped one out. From over 10" down came the mercury dime.

About 45 minutes later I got another very deep hit...and it too sounded good. While it wasn't a "repeater"...it sounded so sweet in a couple of spots...I knew it was going to be silver.
Again from 10" down came a silver dime...this time a 1907 Barber. :icon_sunny:

At this point my buddy and I had 3 silver dimes between us and neither of us had dug a wheatie yet. I didn't know it yet...but that wasn't going to change...and the day would get better.

Phil popped out another merc or two...then headed for home.

I continued to hunt for another hour or so...and got a nice roosey pocket spill in a bunch of fill dirt from again 10" down.
At this point I've got 4 silver in my pouch (silver dime trifecta) and still haven't dug a wheatie....my kind of hunt.

Well right at the end of the hunt I got a very sweet hit and it had the mellow warbly tones I love....and the depth meter was buried. I'm thinkin..."silver dime grand slam"...and this has to be a seated dime.

I dug a monster plug about 7" deep and ran the probe...nothin'?? ???

I then dug another big chunk out...at least 2" or more...and ran the probe again. It screamed this time.

After another 2" of dirt came out...I saw the glimmer of silver...but is WASN'T what I expected. From 11" down came a freakin' 1944 Washington quarter. ::)
Don't get me wrong...I am not complaining about it....but was really thinking it was going to be a seated dime. Oh well...at least I got a silver grand slam with 2 roosey's....a merc...a barber...and the washington quarter.

I also found a sterling silver Skull pendant...an old brooch missing the center stone....the ancient peacock hat pin...the St. Christophers charm....the dainty little broken sterling ID bracelet....and the biggest letdown of the day...the colorful good luck horseshoe charm from 14" down that I thought for sure was silver. ???

What's crazy is the fact that I never did dig a wheatie.... 5 Silver coins for me from 10"+ down....and NO wheaties...I'll take that ratio any day of the week. :icon_sunny: ;D

Thanks for viewing...and good luck on your next hunt.

Awesome hunt Bryce. Lately I have been having the same problem, few to no wheats, lots of silver. But I think I have an answer, for me at least; Now that I own a Pro coil, I have been hearing the silver better at deeper depths and I think I am subconsciously ignoring the wheats. The unmistakeable silver sound on the Minelabs is just that, UNMISTAKABLE! When I get done cherry pickin' my old haunts, then I will go back and dig everything..........NGE

Great job, Bryce. Five silver is always a great day. I like the JI Case pin, too. That is pretty cool.

Keep up the good work!

Looks good. I'm drooling over that barber dime. ;D

Some days the silver wheat ratio is good and other days it just aint. I've had that happen a couple times - silver but no wheats.

Bob
Thanks Bob. I wish that ratio would happen more often

Very Nice, Bryce!!

Congrats on your dime trifecta. I hardly ever see you dig Rosies anymore. ;D ;D

I've had a few days where I didn't get one wheat, and just got silver, but those days are very few. I usually find double digit wheats every time out.

Good luck on your next hunt!! :notworthy:

Dan
Thanks Dan. I'm sure I'll dig wheaties out the wazoo the next hunt...and no silver ;D

Many is the time I have been on an older site, seen the reeded silver edge, and called a couple of fellows over to see the prize emerge, only to be defeated by breaking the clod open to reveal a silver Roosevelt dime that was lurking somehow amongst the Indian Head pennies.

The '44 quarter that deep is crushing, but you must "embrace the horror", you must pass through the pain of the deep '44 quarter, you must be a survivor.
;D I believe I can "tough" it out. Very rarely will you ever see me somewhat letdown to dig a silver quarter ;D

Way to go Bryce ! I think silver quarters are a tough find , any kind of silver when first seen against the dirt is a thrill ! Argentium.
Thanks buddy. They really are hard to pop out.

Nice silver,

I'd take that ratio to wheats anyday. Looks like another good yr coming up for you.

Thanks Dr. Ace. I didn't even know what that pin was until somebody pointed it out to me.

Bryce..You are off and running again on the silver count. I'll bet that you don't even need a detector. You could probably get down with your nose at ground level and just sniff those buggers out. Keep em coming bro.
Chris
Thanks Chris ;D I hope to get out again before long...but it might be quite a few days. Keep on poppin' out those old coppers my friend

Let me make one thing perfectly clear: I've dug enough wheat pennies! I'll take a no wheat day anytime, as long as the silver's coming. You know, though, that the little buggers are there, and you'll make up for it next time!
;D I'm sorry to say...I bet you're right H.D. :icon_sunny: I bet next time iIdig a ton of wheaties...and the silver doesn't come out to play ;D

Bryce;
Ya gotta be pleased with the coinage, I would be thrilled. But the relics, really get my attention, just tell more about the people that dropped the coins.
