Hi all,
I brought my son over the river into Illinois to spend a couple of days with his grandma..I took the detector along in case I could get away for even a little while. In the past I had several opportunities to check a few yards on my mother-in-law's street (some houses were built in the '20s) and managed to find coins one time or another, but nothing really old..mostly wheat pennies, silver Rosevelt dimes and once a '52 Washington quarter. A few weeks ago I checked the yard of my mother-in-law's next door neighbor and found 17 wheats and 2 silver Rosevelts, so it's a good bet her entire neighborhood is loaded with old coins.
Before going back home I got a chance to run the coil over a yard right up the street, 14 houses away. The houses are close together and the yards are small, but something unexpected was waiting for me under a very large elm tree. The signal jumped between a quarter and a half, so I figured it was maybe a Washington..I dug out a chunk of dirt and saw what every detectorist LOVES to see - a big silver rim. I figured a Kennedy or a Franklin if I was lucky..then I saw the eagle! I haven't found a Walker since 1997 and was quite shocked to say the least. I swear I found it within 5 minutes of turning the detector on, and it was the first coin I found there! The only other coins I came up with were 3 modern Lincoln pennies. I also found another antique Tootsietoy car to add to my growing collection. I have no idea what the other thing in the picture is.
The pics below show the coin before and after a cleaning with baking soda and water.
I guess whenever I go visit I'll be taking the detector along and keep asking around for more yards to hunt..I'm sure there's lots more to find.
