Larson if you google Archaic you will have fun on the reading. Its a place in time. Say like Paleo then early Archaic then Archaic,Woodland, Mississipian and so forth. Its kind of diffrent in every area as diffrent styles evolved. One of our last time periods around here was the Dallas Period. Google it and your area here is one site you might like from a quick search.

Those, in my opinion, look like Late Archaic to Middle Woodland points. The names Pelican Lake, unclassified Early Woodland, Besant, and Samantha could all be used for those points.

There are basically four time/cultural periods that collectors use. These are: Paleo, Archaic, Woodland, and Historic. In North Dakota, however, the periods Plains Village (similar to Mississippian) and Equestrian Nomadic should also be used to avoid confusion. Also, time/cultural periods differ throughout the Country. For example, in North Dakota Besant points are classified as Middle Woodland but in Wyoming they are classified as Late Archaic.

Here is a list of time/cultural periods for North Dakota: (I don't have much to do tonight, so I feel like writing,lol)

PALEO: 11000-5500 BC. The days of megafauna such as mammoths, camels, extinct bison, etc. People were highly mobile during this period.

ARCHAIC: 5500-400 BC. Megafauna are extinct. People adapted to a changing climate/environment.

-Early: 5500-2800 BC

-Middle: 2800-1000 BC

-Late: 1000-400 BC

WOODLAND: 400 BC - AD 1200. Pottery and some gardening first appear. The bow and arrow are also believed to have been invented, however both dart points and arrowheads were used during this period. The bow and arrow could have been invented long before the Woodland period but nobody knows for certain.

-Early: 400-100 BC

-Middle: 100 BC - AD 600

-Late: AD 600-1200

PLAINS VILLAGE (Mandan/Hidatsa and Arikara): AD 1100-1830. Characterized by extensive horticulture and large villages. Shortly after 1830 virtually all of the surviving Plains Villagers had moved to the Knife River and Garrison areas.

EQUESTRIAN NOMADIC (Sioux): 1780-1880. Horses were introduced to what is now North Dakota sometime in the mid 1700s.
