found this sheet of lead out deep off Cape cod beach
2 brass square nails and brass spikes found in same area
did they use lead sheeting on boats/ships? - I know they used copper

Yes, they used lead at different periods in time, depending on which country etc. Lead was used early, on some, then later, and some even later. Copper sheathing has been used for centuries too. Copper is still used for big wooden boats. They didnt use brass on the nails and spikes, it is 30% zinc and wont work in saltwater. They used bronze for just about any underwater and above water marine fitting. For centuries. Still do. Any markings at all on the nails? Maybe a close up of the nails and spikes too. Sheathing nails are usually square shank and about 1 inch or so long. Heads are usually countersunk, flathead. When you find them in a reef, you usually find many of them. Nice finds.
