what is bfo please

i went to the local second hand market and met a seller he showed me a machine it was a bit chunky however he said it was a bfo md an extremly advanced metal detector didnt seem to be branded he claimed he made it out of old transistor radios said i could have it for only £180 pounds. I noticed the bottom panel hung on with cellotape so he said this was a water proof coating and said he would take £100 pound for it bargain i thought got it back home I have a bad back now as it is very heavy and started it up it screamed like a banshee in heat then the coil thing fell off it was a old sweet tin lid padded out with cardboard. I tried going back to the market again but the fellow never seems to be there even his number is a talking clock thing i think he must have written the wrong number down. Anyway after messing around with it black smoke came out of it.

My question is this what is a bfo metal detector and how do i repair this fine machine thanks

They are what they are... they do work when they are not falling apart.

Best case: He sold it and didn't know what it was - and you bought it and didn't know what it was.

Worst Case: You bought it and he knew he screwed you over.

All the big name MD Co.s used to make BFOs... But, technology has left them to the attics and garages of tinker's, and cub scout projects.

When I first read this I thought the poster was having a bit of fun with us. If not please forgive me for my thoughts.
However, if you are quite serious, your first effort is to try and track down the seller to retrieve your money. Check with the other sellers at the market to try to find a name or address for the seller. I personally would spend a lot of time and effort in trying to locate THIS seller. By the way I agree with Montana Jim- There was no mistake on the phone number.

If you end up stuck with this thing- a last resort would be to take a photo of it and post it here.

It is a vintage metal detector website. There are some folks who collect vintage detectors. At best you will retrieve only a small fraction of your money because of it's condition but perhaps it is a rare model which would bring more. It would be better than pitching it in the dumpster.

thanks for the advice i manged to track the seller down he was in the process of moving so he was to busy to talk he however refunded my money minus what he called expensives ie £45.00 i went home and flew the thing away he said it wasnt his fault and we arranged to meet next week this time he says he has a ufo metal detector any one heard of it thanks typed ufo in to google comes up with aliens and stuff he said it was an upgrade on the bfo model called an ufo 2100 +kp metal detector

I wouldn't deal with this guy anymore. Go to a licensed detector dealer or get a detector through a well-known and reputable company. By the way, "bfo" detectors will help you find a lot of Big Fuggin Objects underground, but little else. When you have to return the UFO to the hangar, the guy will have made 90 off of you for "expenses."

Gee...can't you see your being taken for a ride.

(1) Name any BFO thats large/bulky etc except for the last few years of production by the likes of Garrett that were well made and had their name all over for free advertising.
(2) Black smoke. You can burn any machine out and smell the burning but black smoke !
(3)Tin lid coil !!!
(4)Cellotape is waterproof coating

and sells U.F.O. detectors.

'Strike it rich' you have missed your calling you should be selling long distance locators.

Sounds like this guy is pushing Chinese detectors with 50 year old technology. Walk away . . . fast.

Look for names like Garrett, Minelab, Fisher, Whites, Tesoro, Nautilus, Teknetics, even Troy. I'm sure I've offended the Compass and Bounty Hunter users, but such are the nature of opinions. Stay away from BFO (beat frequency oscillation), IB (Induction-Balance), TR (transmit-recieve) or any PI units that can't be demonstrated to be less than 20 years old (Pulse-Induction was around in the 70's but not near as effective as modern versions)
