I foun this today while searching for a civil war campsite,never did find the campsite but found this odd piece anybody have a clue what it is ? The whole goese all the way threw and the hole is larger on the tappered end than it is on the other. Any ideas?

Reminds me of a old worn "bevel gear"? I know I've seen that before

windmills had a similar gear.I hesitate because the space between high points seems smaller than the highs..symetry would be critical.still,not in hand,I like the bevel gear option.

I thought it was some kinda gear but the grooves are rounded it dont look like its wore but made that way

perhaps a foot for stove or other heavy object?I say again stove because its mass is great for its size.common on stove parts

Mabey a part of a wheat, corn grinder/mill?

Looks like a large rimming tool or maybe a small cannon bore cleaner and the groves where used to free or clean the build up inside and so it wouldn't stick . The hole is off sized because it had a wooden pole it attached to and needed to be tapered to stay in place , kind of like a ball joint or bearing has a tapered hole .
Just a guess ... and a opinion ... Woodstock

Looks like a steering gear that attaches to the steering box of an old tractor, or farm implement.

Well because of the area it was found I'm sticking to a bore reamer , or a large reamer of some sort . Woodstock

I dont think its a gear or a reamer. I think its decoration.

Thats consistent with Ox horn weights so they fit on tight but I havent found one with this decor..

I have an idea. Measure the outside diameter and someone may be able to tell you if it matches a cannon caliber. We may not be able to ID it but we may be able to eliminate some guesses through the process of elimination.
