What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

I keep seeing threads from people finding cool coins and relics in their own yard. I've only actually detected mine once, and I did find a musket ball. I can't even tell you how many times I've driven over an hour somewhere to detect and come up empty handed, atht's why I get such a kick out of seeing people find good fings in their own yards.

1 dime, 1 nickle, 1 cent, all clads. 1 old screw....and...

an old brass sprinkler head. Being that I deal with sprinklers as a career, that's the last thing I needed! I spent 40 minutes digging that sucker up, threw it back in the hole. :'(

1897 V nickel (oldest coin find) & lead cowboy..........both in backyard. Tourquoise sterling ring found right next to my front porch.

Is that one of those rare 'alterantative lifestyle coyboys'? Dam, that guy's gay!
(not that there's anything wrong with that)

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

Absolutely nothing :P Where my house is was nothing but desert 15 years ago. I brought in 3 dump trucks full of topsoil before laying the sod so I know there's not much there.

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

Wow! People have found some great stuff burried in their own yards! I'm building a new house and its on some family farmland and I know where there are some old rifles burried but my father in law doesn't want me to dig them up. They're from the early 1900s and there's about 25 oiled, wrapped and burried in a crate. That is so tempting everytime I look over at that spot...

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

Oh Man!... You should talk your F-I-L to just dig em up and look at em and re-oil them at least!.... That is incredible!

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

My house was built in 1922 but I suspect there was another house here before this one by some of the finds and the depth of them and more I haven't dug yet. A few of the finds are 1883 IH, 1907IH, mercury dime and here are the pics. Hope it's not too many.

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

I'm a little late on this one.....

ok.. how about in my basement?? It was a dirt floor before I poured concrete during renovation.... I found all the brass pieces to a Union haversack... and this stencil was there too...

The second picture is a copper I dug in the yard..

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

This is timely since I just detected my backyard yesterday. I found a lead ingot which is stamped TATHAM across the top. It is shaped just like the pictures of gold bars you see at Fort Knox with the slanted sides. Does anyone have any information on lead ingots?

Great thread!

I've hunted all over the country and to date my very best finds have always been in my own yard. My best as of a few days ago is the solid gold (Rose Gold) chain shown in my avatar. I'd walked over that spot 100's of times. I'd even hunted it with several top machines. Never got a beep until last week. It was down 5 inches and is maybe 80 years old or more.

Prior to the chain my best was a cache of rare lumber tokens worth $100 each (sold two) I dug at the corner of my garage.

I think the reason for this is we lelax more when we hunt our own property. And too, weather conditions play a major part on how detectors work.

When I was a teenager with my first detector (many years ago), found a beat up 1872 seated liberty quarter in the backyard of our 1930's home. Still the oldest US coin I have ever found.

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

Can't beat living in a Civil War city - Vicksburg, in this case. I searched my yard for months looking for the other half of this CS two-piece - all to no avail.

Re: What's Your Best Find In Your Own Yard?

Not much history where I live. I envy those whose property has Civil, Revolutionary or Colonial artifacts.

My property and the state of Michigan was settled back in the 1830's and lumbered back in the late 19th century and my best find was a cant hook (a forged tool with a wooden handle that was used as a lever to roll heavy logs) that I was able to verify was made just post civil war by a local manufacturer.

I have also found many round musket balls...mostly drops and a couple of pulls. I assume they were from hunters and trappers or perhaps the local indians who traveled and camped on the Muskegon river that runs through.
