Back when the Son of Sam was on the loose, and if you didn't come home before sunset your parents had no way to call you because cell phones didn't exist. They just prayed you would show up eventually or call from a payphone and tell them where you were. Put a washer in the payphone to get a free call, or better yet, just play a tape recording of the tone for a quarter into the reciever and get free calls for life. Such things I heard were done, I wasn't born yet to experience them. Apparently you could also still find silver coins in your change on occasion still in circulation. Probably coin roll hunting was essentially just going to the bank and straight up just asking for a roll of silver coins and getting them for face value.

Back in '73 I spent a summer working at a small resort on Donner Lake
in N. Cal. We had a boat dock with fuel, and it was the only fuel dock on
the lake. Our gas was 37 cents a gallon, and people just raised all kinds
of hell about it because it was 3 cents higher than the pump gas in town.

Worked at several gas stations, starting when I was 13. Back then there was
actual service done, as in fill the tank, wash the windows, check the oil, etc.
Ask for that today and they'd look at you like you're crazy.. :laughing7:

I grew up in Orange County, Calif., and there were fewer issues back then.
There were fewer genders, fewer TV channels, fewer bras (that was a good
thing), fewer bills (no cell phone or internet bills), fewer morons with guns
running around and shooting the place up.

Sunday nights...lying in bed listening to Dr. Demento on my transistor radio
with that nasty ear plug in so it didn't wake my older brother. As I got older,
that became Koss headphones and Jim Ladd's late night radio show on
KMET or KLOS.

Can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I can sure remember plenty
about the 70's. 8-)

Hate to take a wizz on the 'good ole campfire' but life in N Ireland in the 70's through to the 2000's was pretty dangerous..
Yes we made do, yes we had haircuts and jeans and all the retro consumer necessities, but not the freedom of expression or liberty that was enjoyed across the pond...
Riding around with your girl, in your first car, trying to avoid trouble spots, riots, bombs and unwarranted attention from the state authorised militias... Totally different ball game... I often reflected how there was no international intervention, not a whisper of it,, our mighty cousins in the country we helped give birth to and fought and died for ..... or our European friends, who again did nothing.. So we stagnated, abandoned and better off not mentioning.. The pretty girls too, looking all natural etc...
Ahhhh if it were only back in the crazy times...
