I am about to take my first trip out to the north of the 49. Can someone give me a rundown on where i am and am not allowed to look around there? I cant really find any info on the laws either, as i understand it as long as nothing is powered by a motor we are ok. is tht right?

On blm or forest service you can pan, sluice, crevice. The south, north and middle fork American rive open to panning from Folsom lake up past Colfax , around Coloma also. Most of the area mentioned has no claims.

Hello, yes, blm land is your best bet. Places like the Yuba river next to independence bridge. Is an excellent place to find some gold. Go to blm california online and they have some guide lines for small time prospectors to follow too. The american river east fork, chilli bar and lotus ca, have some good areas. Or you could join some local clubs.
