I finally got a chance to hunt for about 2 hours today. Been pretty busy the past few weeks. Second hit was the 1954 Rosie. I have found over 300 dimes and this is only my second Rosie. Seems like I have better luck finding the mercs….Also scored a 1955 wheat and a pendent type thingy of an insurance company that used to be in the area. HH all.

I think all the Rosies are up north here! I find tons, but seldom find ones that I need to fill two collections. I took almost 70 to a dealer to trade this morning.

SC,
Congrats on your hunt. I have the same problem you have. More Mercs than Rosies. I never find Rosies.
I think Captn SE (Dan) may have been to our part of the South? ;D

hahahaha...Sadam Rosie...

I find about 10 Mercs for every silver rosie. My theories but I never took the time to confirm them are:

1. They just minted more mercury dimes then silver rosies. (I never looked this one up in the redbook.)

2. When they stopped using silver after 1964 the rosies were hoarded where as when they changed from the mercury dime to the rosie people continued to use the mercury dime and did not hoard them. This would create a much longer time frame that the mercury dime was used compared to the rosie.

3. Since rosies are newer then mercurys they should be shallower targets so no matter what detector you are using you would have a better chance of finding it. So even if you are using a cheap detector or an expensive one you should be able to find all the not so deep targets pretty easily.

Just some thoughts.

Sorry, Doug, I've never been to the Carolinas. But would love to one day. ;D

Mercs were minted for 29 years, compared to the Rosie, which was only minted for 18 years.

SC_Hunter, that's quite a lopsided ratio of merc to rosies you have found. I have about the same # of mercs as rosies this year (264M/272R).
Nice digs!!
