I am going to play the Devils advocate ... Why would anyone with youR exact same intentions want to sell you their “treasure map”?

I think you would get a far better response if you were to propose an exact same offer to a group of realtors rather then a group of metal Detectorists.

Cheers and welcome to our forum. B0498C19-E801-400D-A6E3-CE27002C476B.jpeg

Paying to detect is plain against my idea of the hobby. Finding permissions is not easy for many people, I doubt you will get many takers. I am older, no spring chicken, and I would never sell permissions, most are given to people who assure the landowner that they will not have others running around making holes on their property. Do your own research, knock on doors, write letters, ask friends, relatives, and neighbors, do it yourself. New generation needs to learn how to do it themselves too.

Create relationships with people. Virtual door knocking and emails are not personal. Forge a relationship with the owner of the property. Have them see that a “spring chicken” is as polite and thoughtful and caring as an “old bird”. After you develop those relationships you can grow your “pecking field” by asking the person that gave you the permission if they know anyone else in their family and friends that you might be able to reach out to. Then it’s a warm door knock rather then a cold door knock on your next adventure.

Don’t be greedy offer the property owner a look at all of your finds and first dibs on anything you can find on their land. 99 times out of 100 they will let you keep all of it but you offering is a huge selling point in them letting you hunt their land. Now that being said you “must” Be a great steward of their property and not leave mini grand canyons behind your digs. If you leave their property better then you found it(pick up trash as well) you will get a great recommendation to their friends and family plus you can use them as a reference on future digs.

Good luck and happy hunting

Wow, four detectors and a month into it, go man, go!! I have also seen abandoned houses and/or properties and gone to the town hall and through their land maps (plats) and records to find the name of the owner. Then I write the owner a letter since they are not usually nearby. If the property is owned by a corporation it never works, but I have received permission from private owners for some interesting properties. Again, like WS above says, you gotta be really good with your pinpointing and not make big holes or use shovels on lawns. When I get permission from an owner of an abandoned or vacant property I ask for a letter or email of that permission just in case. Some good meaning neighbors will call the cops if they see somebody detecting an abandoned property and proof gets them and/or the cops calmed down. Lots of people don't bother with the work involved to get permissions for these places and some of these sites have never been hunted because of this. Just a tip from an old rooster.

There is only one place owned by an individual I have paid to dig. It's way north of here. He charges everyone a flat fee and has for years but I can get more in 2 hours than in 3 days other places and it's nice stuff. It's a very historic area and hundreds of acres.

He has the site and knows it. So, it's pay out or get out. He arrests trespassers and prosecutes them too.

There are paid digs around the country, and will be again once covid is waning. I don't see much difference between paying to go to a group dig versus an individual, but I would refrain from paying individuals or it could become the norm, and not the exception, and every time one of us wants to hunt a lawn we are expected to pay the owner something. It's a bad precedent. Most folks don't care if you detect on the property as long as you are respectful and don't litter or dress like "Rambo" going in, carrying a six pack of beer and a .45. (Yes, I am embellishing this somewhat). I wore a nice suit once and got the permission!

Hello Tristan. I see you live in St Pete and you're also a diver. I put together a group of treasure hunters and we have a lot of sites. Always looking for someone else to join because some of my divers have full time jobs and can't take off during the week.
