First silver quarter(BARBER)

Thursday I got to hunt a friends(grandmothers) old farm, and we didnt find much, except a bunch of metal trash(axe head, shovel head, fencing etc) then He found a wheatie, I walked over and said, there must be silver around, and sure enough, I started swinging, and found that 54 rosie... pretty beat up but its still silver! Then that was about it for our finds that day, I did manage to find a wheat after he left...

Today I wanted to get up early and detect some local schools, But I slept in, and wasted most of my time, but had an hour and half until I had to be at work, so I headed to a school for a quick 1 hour hunt... I knew there used to be soccer fields, so that was my focus area, looking for jewelery/coins left behind...

Figured I would swing until I got to my destination, and first hit I got too, was this beautiful Barber!! The metal is in great shape, not very worn at all, except it has some tarninshing or something... should I try and clean it up, or let it be?

Man that is so sweet! My 5th piece of silver since I got detecting, only a month ago... got 2 pieces of jewelery, a war nickel, that rosie, and the barber...

Congrats! I just got my first Barber quarter a week ago.

If you're not planning on selling it, I say clean it. Gently at first. No harm if you don't destroy it. Mine is a bit tarnished too. I'm slowly removing it but don't want to remove too much as I like the contrast. I just want it "even" if that makes sense.

Yeah I think im going to sell it, I like the silver content, but it has a higher numismatic value I believe, So I would sell it, and buy pure silver with the funds, or save up for the AT Pro

You're not likely to get more than scrap silver value for that coin if you sell it (unless you find a buyer who is willing to overpay!). Last time I checked, silver quarters were in the $6-7 range in silver value; you'd probably be offered less. Keep it, and sell the Washingtons you find in the future.

I just checked, and today's melt value for a quarter is $5.94. Keep the coin!

Oh really? Either way, it was a sweet find, and gave me a good rush when I saw the stars peeking out of the dirt covered coin.

I looked it up on this site: 1903 Barber Quarter Value | CoinTrackers

It said even in poor condition it has numismatic value of 10$, with a perfect condition going up to 550$

I dont think its perfect, but the metal isnt worn down at all, can read the "e pluribus unum" on the banner the eagle is holding in the back, the coin is just a bit tarnished/stained black...

Either way, it is a sweet coin, I would hate to part with it, but im more after silver than numismatic coins, So thats what I will do...

Poor condition is more a description of wear on the coin; with that tarnish (which, by the way, adds character to the coin), nobody who knows what they're doing will pay $10. That is also the retail value; again, no dealer will pay retail for it. Your other option, if you really want to get rid of (sell) it is to wait until you've accumulated more silver and sell when the price goes up again. It was near $50 an ounce not too long ago; obviously, the price of silver has come back to earth some, but why be so anxious to sell for so little money?

Good points... It is only a few bucks difference

O yeah I know all about the 50$/oz silver... I started watching precious metal prices in 2010, after the collapse... watched a documentary called, end of liberty, and became aware... anyways Yeah silver was flying up 1$-2$ per day until they announced bin laden was killed(if you believe that) and the priced plummeted... just as the silver hit 50$...

I don't think Cointrackers is a very reliable source for coin values.

My first silver quarter find was a 1908 Barber no mm in very nice shape. I took it to the local coin shop and he said $26. I seen one sell on e-bay for $137 that same week and Im sure mine was in nicer shape. Just sayin check out e-bay. Some people pay crazy stupid prices for coins. HH

Was given some silver jewelery cleaner for xmas, and tried it on some dimes before I tried it on the quarter... Wow it worked great, only 5-10 seconds in the liquid and those dimes rinsed off very nice...

The quarter took about 10 minutes to soak, and scrub with a toothrbrush to get decent, then finished it off with baking soda/water mixture... Now this coin rocks! I didnt like the black tarnish all over it, even though people said not to clean it, I still didnt like it, and cleaned it... love it now!

Full LIBERTY on the head also... very nice quality coin, still my best find

Looks good cleaned like that..I personally dont sell any of my "Finds" unless I could make a substainal profit. My first quarter was a Barber also, and turned out to be a semi key date worth like 30 bucks. But no way I would sell it.

Im also a nerd that goes thru all my past years finds about once a month, and its great remembering where and when I found them, and how excited I was when I did find it...To me, its about the memories of my finds....Now If i found somethign worth hundreds or more....then it would be a different story
