Today i went back to the Field where the Roman Denarius was found on thursday. It was a long day, 8 hrs in rain and wind. Thursday the soil was dry to the bone and now when conditions were better the finds were better too. A bunch of WWII scrap like usual (buttons, buckle, cap badge are the better finds). coins were sparse like the last time, but this hunt a beautiful 1597 Nederlands Gold Dukat and a 1638 Cologne hammered Silver popped up! :hello2: I found an scrappy roman sestercius too, but it didn't know where it is... :icon_scratch: Well spent weekend time. Best is that the date from these two coins is in the same timeframe and the silver one had thick green patina on it. May coming from a small hoard? Enjoy the pics!

Man what awesome finds......Oh to have such an chance at something like that! Congrats....................HH

Big Congrats on two Super Coins! :occasion14:

There's been a few Netherlands ducats posted since I've been watching, you've got the oldest :hello2:
from when the Dutch were a world SuperPower.

Isn't it amazing that you found two coins hundreds of years old, the designs of which are basically
unchanged in the 20th Century varieties, I've always liked that Germanic doubleheaded Eagle.

Looking forward to seeing more goodies! HH to you, Herbie. :hello:

Thanks Herbie! It's not easy to find a match on the Dukat. Most are 1700s and younger. Looks like not too many Dukats from the 16th century. I will surely go back to that field after plow.

Way to go Lu!!! I told you you were due for gold. Now go back & find the rest just a little deeper. Just like to add I cast my first vote for banner on this one. Good luck.

I just spent a few minutes looking for your Ducat in my world gold book,
jeez, no wonder I couldn't find it,
The book is 1600- present :icon_scratch:
I think you'll need to consult an expert to get mintage etc on that one :)
I find 1600 dated Utrecht Ducats bearing the TRA below sword,

In the same early period, United Netherlands also minted a gold 'Florin d'or'

of the same weight as the Ducat, and bearing the Dual headed eagle.

You found a very Special Coin !!

What i have found so far is this: mcsearch.info - The medieval & modern coin search engine
Nederland, Utrecht, City Arms as mintmark. Second Gold on left side.
Nevertheless i will take it to an expert or wait till i turn some finds in when i have the next meeting with my archaeologist.

Yes, i know that! :occasion14: I hope for a coin spill there but i have to wait till that field got a deep plow.

Nice dukaat, and minted in my hometown. I like the guy in armor with the slashing sword. It dates from the 80 years war. The northern Netherlands relied heavily on German mercenaries in their war against Spain. Perhaps some mercenary took this coin back to Germany for you to find.

Possible. And this area saw also many marching troops during the 30 years war. A small chapel was destroyed by dutch troops not more than a mile away. Netherlands coins are together with french ones the most common foreign coins from this timeframe.

Information on these coins is rather sparse for almost any year..
the little that I found on my 18th C example shows that the later issues must be quite common,
prices realized are not much over spot../.
(I mention this only as an indicator of rarity, my book does not list mintages for ANY years ??)
Your early issue is of MUCH great desirability :)

Best wishes when the field is plowed !! HH, Herbie.
