We got a late start at work today so I had an hour or so to kill and went to a field that I have found a good amount of colonial coppers and LC's. Was doing o.k. with the finds with some relics and wheaties and it was getting close to time to head to work so I told myself one more signal. I got a solid penny/dime reading on my M6 VDI of 79. Dug down and at about 7 inches I saw a copper, thought sweet, another LC. Got rubbing it to see what it was (dumb move) and about pooped myself when I saw what it was...a 1787 Mass Copper!!!! :hello2:

Re: Mass. Copper!!

Great find, Mainedigger. Where in Maine are you? I am new to this forum, first post even, and new to detecting. I bought an M6 last month. I have found nothing but clad, outside of a 1928 Buffalo nickel and would love any pointers I could get from someone local or atleast from Maine using the same equipment I have. Thanks for letting us see the copper. T.

Re: Mass. Copper!!

What a beauty that is, Mainedigger. I haven't seen too many of those on Tnet.

Great find. :icon_sunny:

Looks like banner material to me  How awesome for you..congratulations on a truly rare find!

Thanks for all the comments, I appreciate them!
Does anyone have an idea on the grade/value of this coin? I will never sell it but am curious as to how it would be graded out and the value of it. I realize it is a dug coin and that adversely effects both grading and value but am also curious if this would be worth slabbing thru either NGC or PCGS...any comments suggestions would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Nice Mass Cent, don't see enough of them being found, although they do appear every now and then in the metal detecting forum world. :)
A TNet member who unfortunetly does not post here even though he joined, found a beautiful Mass Cent a couple years ago in NH.

Not sure of the distribution of them, neither I or my son have ever found one in Southern NJ but I believe my Burlington County friend who has found over a thousand colonials (near McGuire AFB area) has not found a Mass Cent either, but has found 1/4 of a Mass Pine Tree coin.

So, congrats on a very nice and hard to find State Copper coin.

Don

I will double check, but I am pretty sure my Father had dug one here in Virginia, that and a nice NJ!.
I'll try to get some pics.

Green...it also had been on my wish list since I first started detecting 3 years ago, and thought it would be on my want list for a long time ...Guess that means you will be finding yours this year as well where its been on yours for 3 years as well.... Hope you get to experience the same rush I did when I first realized what it was when I pulled it out of the dirt....
