1848 Large, 1867 Shield, Button, & Misc.

Greetings Friends,
I re hunted a couple of field sites this week and found these.
The LC was a pleasant surprise as I found it in an area I had hunted at least 6 times.
I dug a deep plug, broke it open, and out popped the LC landing as shown. It cleaned up well in the tumbler.
I think the shield nickel is an 1867. The "In memory of" was found near the LC.
Thanks for looking and I hope you all have a great weekend. Merf

Two very sweet coins Merf. That LC did clean up nice.

The picture of the farm field looks very cool but intimidating. So much ground to cover!

Bob

Thanks Bob

Re: 1848 Large, 1867 Shield, Button, & Misc.

As always, outstanding pics! Congratulations on another spectacular hunt  I was very impressed by how nicely that LC cleaned up in the tumbler and honestly never even though about that. We do more damage to them trying to clean them with chemicals, etc than the tumbler did. The second they come out of the ground all of their numismatic value is pretty much shot anyways. Do you mind telling us what kind of medium you tunbled it in. I know a lot of guys use lead shot on clad.

I always enjoy the pics of the location too!! ;D

Thanks Mark
I fill the tumbler about 2/3 full of white aquarium gravel, ad 1/2 ounce of white vinegar, add water to just below the top of the gravel and tumble. This coin took 2 hours to get rid of the green. The vinegar gives the coin a slightly orange hue so I tumbled it with just water and gravel for another 2 hours.
I check the coin every hour as each coin is different. I have had some that clean up nice in half that time.
Best luck-----Merf

Great research and great coins! [neither of which I've ever found one of].

I hope to follow your example and find one or more of the 8 schoolhouse sites around here.

Thanks for the tumbler tips, too. That's a good option for some of these old copper coins. I'd only processed clad previously.

I am just about done until after the harvest----The crops are getting almost too thick to hunt in.
Hope I can get permission at a couple of new spots after the harvest.

Best luck my friend. Merf
