1848 Large, 1867 Shield, Button, & Misc.

Greetings Friends,
I re hunted a couple of field sites this week and found these.
The LC was a pleasant surprise as I found it in an area I had hunted at least 6 times.
I dug a deep plug, broke it open, and out popped the LC landing as shown. It cleaned up well in the tumbler.
I think the shield nickel is an 1867. The "In memory of" was found near the LC.

Well done!

Always nice to see that there's something left--and the LC is a pretty coin.

It's good to see those Shield Nickels posted--I've never managed to get my coil over one.

And of course, STELLAR photos. :thumbsup:

I've got a non-dug 1848 my brother gave me....actually t I don't have a dated LC,dug,to this date.She's a beaut Merf,67' just as sweet.Nice job all around....I think the 54. is modern though.Great Dig's Merf!!! :thumbsup:

You know...I had a thought about that "In Memory Of" plaque...It has a church on it--I was wondering if the church history around your area might be a clue. Was there a building that burned and they made these tags to sell as a fundraiser? It could also be "In Memory of" a person though...

Can I see a photo of the back?

Might be for a church, wish I knew. The back is plain with no markings-
The site where I found it was gone by 1892---I think it was a store or tavern.

Merf, you know me, I loooooooove those "largies." That 1848 would be welcomed in my collection...in any condition; yours is suuuuuper nice, buddy! :icon_sunny:

I would go nuts if I found a Shield or a LC! I sure wish those Nickels
from around Northern IL would come out of the ground a little nicer

BTW, I could sit in the middle of that corn field and watch that storm all afternoon :wink:

That is 18 I have found since Jan first. I think I only found 2 last year.
I have really been lucky that with the old maps I was able to find some choice spots.
I think 2 of the spots were stores or taverns.

Two very sweet coins Merf. That LC did clean up nice.

The picture of the farm field looks very cool but intimidating. So much ground to cover!
