1864 Indian Head Penny

I never get bored hunting my yard when I have a bit of extra time, and am always surprised at what turns up even after exploring much of the land. Thinking it was another gunshot shell I was happy to be wrong and dig an Indian head penny. I learned there were 3 different versions minted in that year. I don’t know which version this is..copper-nickel or bronze and it does not look like there is an ”L” inscribed. It weighs 2.85 grams. I used toothpicks and Andres pencils to clean it, otherwise it looked like a gob of dirt. Glad to share my story with folks who are interested!

I just built a deck and a 18ft x18ft 4ft high fenced garden if I start digging hole the ball and chain will want me to plant trees in them lol

Thanks, Jeff. I know purists would frown on the cleaning, but an unreadable coin holds no joy for me. I am happy with the results. Happy hunting!

There were 2 bronze varieties one with L on lower ribbon behind the neck and one without L both weighing 3.11 grams. The one with L had a pointed tip of bust while without L had a round tip of bust. This one looks to me like the round bust variety (no L) and I would say bronze. Still a nice find overall.

well done Kim! Congrats on your saves! I think the same way about unreadable coins. Unfortunately many coins are ruined as the farmers use lots of manure as fertilizers in Germany. I have a huge graveyard full of unreadable coins which won't clean as the material itself is hurt badly.
