Let me guess.... North East?

How do you know it's a conterfiet? Just curious

I've been collecting coins for more than 50 years and was a contributor to the Redbook for about 10 years. Sometimes when you see something it just stands out as not right. I could be wrong, but it sure looks like a counterfeit to me from the photo.

Do you think its a more modern counterfiet? The coins looks pretty old, but I see some things that look off. But I cant tell if its from the wear and tear.

Very cool find!

Awesome find. I am curious to know if counterfeit or not as well. Sometimes the counterfeits are more rare!

I don't think it's a modern counterfeit. They've been making counterfeits since they started making coins. Some of the most collectible US colonial coins are the Machin's Mills pieces. They were made just north of Newburgh, NY. Machin made counterfeit British halfpence and NJ's. I also know someone who collected counterfeit bust half dollars. He had about 200 of them so there are obviously a lot of counterfeits out there. There are even more now that China is making the rare dates like the 1877 Indian, 1909-S VDB cent and 1916-D dime as well as many other key dates.

That's an amazing find there ! Could you please post some close ups of both sides of the coin?

Look's like a "Banner" find to me!...............Im voting!

Wow that seated dollar is amazing. I love seated
Great finds, too bad the dollar have a hole in it, but it still is worth a lot of money, check with a honest coin dealer before selling. good luck in finding more silver coins.

Got permission to search a local yard yesterday. Was surprised to have this pop up in the first 5 minutes or so. Pretty cool- you truly never know what you are going to find!

Very cool find, real or fake.

super sweet. congrats!

Definitely banner-worthy. My vote is in

From the enlarged photos, it sure looks like a genuine US mint product to me. Most period ("contemporary") counterfeits were struck in odd metals like German silver (which it is not), or brass with some sort of plating (which it is not). I have not seen too many silver counterfeits from the 19th century, and this coin looks like dug silver to me. In addition, the numerals in the date look right for an 1870-P Seated dollar. Most counterfeits have misshapen, hand-engraved numerals. Doesn't make much difference; if it's an old counterfeit, it will likely be worth more than a real one. Here's a little tutorial on contemporary counterfeit Seated material.

Thanks guys. I'm lucky to find this. I am new to metal detecting, so every time I find something old and cool, I think 'that's it.. I'll never find anything better'- but I continue to be surprised, and hooked!!

Awesome find!

Well , If it's not a contemporary counterfeit , it's probably rare enough to be banner worthy - and if it is an original mint issue it has to be a banner coin - seriously
when was the last time anybody here can remember a pre - Morgan dollar being dug and posted here ...anybody ? vote is going up now !
