KKC got out on Sunday to a new site that Kyle has been talking about for sometime. I remember he mentioned it last year in November, but we just didn't get around to hitting it until now. I sure am glad to hit it this year though. :icon_thumleft: 2010 is already off to a great start!

Once we got in the field, we noticed thousands of pottery sherds, brick, and clam shells. :headbang: :hello2: We immediately started getting excited. The iron patch was extensive as well and we could tell it is hiding many targets.

I got the 1st copper for the day. This one did not pinpoint well due to the iron. It turned out to be a Connecticut copper. The letters "L I " are evident on the reverse of the coin. :icon_thumleft:

My 2nd copper was an iffy hit and after taking a square nail out of the hole, the signal jumped to "Dime." I was thinking, "Sweet!" :headbang: As you can see on the video, it turned out to be a good one (1807 Draped Bust half cent).

The Bonanza was starting to happen for KKC. The coppers started to flow in after my 2nd copper. My 3rd copper was an exciting find nonetheless. It is a King George II that looks to have been cut intentionally or chopped by the plow. I am guessing in the 1700s, someone at this site needed small change and decided to cut it.

The day ended with another Connecticut copper, but this one was in better condition. We were once again spastic with passion. I ended the day with 4 coppers and 4 buttons (1:1 button to copper ratio). LOL

KKC hit the lottery on this site! Since there is so much iron and the coppers are popping up in areas we have already hit, we are going to slow down this week and pluck out some more. Kyle's research is quite interesting on this site and we know there was a lot of occupation on it back in the late-1700s to the early-1800s.

Keep the passion high!

Kirk

Thursday Update: I hope this cold passes soon. :-\

Can you imagine the number of coppers that must still be at this site :o There is still a mountain of stuff to recover there!

The colonial crew is back to work :headbang:

Swing low and slow my colonial brother and bring us more video !!!

That is exactly the type of site we hit hard twice and get a good chunck of what's there. At that point we move on to look for other new sites, and keep it as back up. Then every year we hunt it when the plow changes things. We have so many sites on our "Colonial circuit" we could probably do ok just hunting those for the year... and we have done that in the past. However, there ain't nothing like finding that nice big patch of old iron, seeing the first targets come out, and know you just started what will be a great day digging.

Just to show how much the iron is masking stuff, we walked in the iron patch with nothing to really show for for at least 15 minutes. After the initial survey of the land, we slowed it down, and that is when the tombacs, pewter spoon pieces, and coppers started popping.

Heck, it took 30 minutes before the 1st copper popped. We originally thought the site was hunted, but once we slowed it down, we knew there were good targets here. The only iron we dug were square nails. We can usually pick between it and get the coppers/buttons/shoe buckles/etc.

I usually get just as many targets once the adrenaline calms a bit and I start moving slower.

I must admit that you guys have got me thinking about trying to video a few of my hunts.
There would not be the amount of excitement that are in your videos, but I may be able to get something from my forgiving soil to show off.

We hope that more people do start filming in the field. It puts a more human element to the forum member.

That would be sweet to see your digs on film. More people have to start doing this. I give it all to CCZ. He was the one who inspired Kyle and I to do it. IP, get the film running on your 1st hunt of 2010. You must!

Congrats Kirk, getting the Coppers after finding that 2 Reale just made the month of March for you one to remember. A lot of coppers came out of the ground this past weekend for your group, here is hoping the next hunt is a grand day to be had also.

Thanks, Don, for the reply and good wishes. I do feel lucky to live in an area of PA that is littered with fields and very little woods. I do feel that we can find more at this site. I am going at a slow pace this Sunday. I am excited to get back there!

Thanks, BB, for the reply. I hope at least one silver comes off this site. PA is known for producing a lot of coppers at these type of sites, but there has to be a Colonial silver somewhere.

Keep the passion high!

That was a memorable weekend. I think you guys can officially say you got me back for the woods site we hit late last year where I found 6 coppers and Between you guys 1 was found. This will be a memorable year for us. Glad we added the filming part to our club.
