I want to say I know very little about the Inca Empire. Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia would seem to point to this area. The beads are individually handmade but when? Are they pre- colombian or colonial and re- strung or post- colonial era like the dated Ecuadorian coin? I don't know. But maybe a search of Inca ancestors would determine if they could have made these beads in the 1800s.

IF... I REPEAT ... IF... :P

IF I had to "shoot from the hip" on this piece...

EARLY 1800's... on the beads.
Made from "ship or gun" brass / bronze.
IN transit on a ship.
This IMO...
Is a sailor trader... fur trader... goods trader... or a straight up full on pirate piece.

This would have been the equivilant of a "trench art"... "ship art" piece.
The reason I say this...
This would have been a quite "time" extensive piece to make.
I think this is an "idle time" Totem.

A banner find all day long.
Real as the day is long.
Cool as water.

I really like this theory(you explian it beautifully), i have heard it before infact ,from the antique dealer who gave me the preist contact . and i have considered it in my early research,
So indeed it may be made at sea onboard a ship,
Maybe a pirate/ smuggler, and therefore more likely to have gold / silver, (i imagine its easier to melt and work then gun metal,?).
The Heart does look like the Famous pirate heart with the three blood drops.
And the reverse that seems to be jesus....
Heres another crazy theory, but i like it...
Perhaps infact is the oldest example of a
Jolly Roger, Or Jovial / Jolly Man,
What is a bountiful pirate, with such freedom and luxury...but a jovial man. And when you feel jovial dont you open your arms wide and embrace the bounty and glory of the earth?
Most famous pirates were slaves, and there crew were slaves, maybe this pirate saw himself as a christ like figure as well, freeing his people etc... Maybe thats why the jovial man depicted also looks like christ.

What are you plans with it, sell or treasure hunt or just hold onto it?
i wish there is a treasure behind it and id love to treasure hunt with it myself, but i cant afford that kind of venture lol unless i get funding lol......id hate to sell it and lose out on that.
Of course id like to sell it, if it will bring me the vast bountys of the earth& wealth! ...
Honestly this peice has alot of history and significance i feel many different types of articles and studies can be written about it.
Just holding onto it seems like neither i or anyone else would benefit from it...
Although maybe it does explain all the good luck if been having lol!

If you were treasure hunting when you bought it then you were definitely successful. It's a beautiful piece with a dose of mystery which makes it even better. Congratulations on the ID of the final coin. And thanks for sharing your mystery with all of us we all enjoy a good one.

Any idea where i can?

it may pay to authenticate it with a reputable auction house...otherwise who knows...EBAY has a lot of un-authenticated stuff that goes for very high prices. A lot of fakes too.

JoeCoins, I'm guessing that Priscilla Muller (curator, book author, etc.) is long retired from The Hispanic Society, however one of her specialties is Spanish Colonial Jewelry. Maybe you can contact the Society in any case, and see if they can offer any assistance ...

Consider also contacting the MET, since they have a very strong ancient jewelry department.

Why do you call this necklace a treasure map? By 1850 with the introduction of steam powered ships, there were only a few small pirate crews left.

n the early 19th century, piracy along the East and Gulf Coasts of North America as well as in the Caribbean increased again. Jean Lafitte was a pirate/privateer operating in the Caribbean and in American waters from his havens in Texas and Louisiana during the 1810s. But the records of the US Navy indicate that hundreds of pirate attacks occurred in American and Caribbean waters between the years of 1820 and 1835. The Latin American Wars of Independence led to widespread use of privateers both by Spain and by the revolutionary governments of Mexico, Colombia, and other newly independent Latin American countries. These privateers were rarely scrupulous about adhering to the terms of their letters of marque even during the Wars of Independence, and continued to plague the Caribbean as outright pirates long after those conflicts ended.

Quoted from wiki pedia

... Notice they say newly independant latin american colonies!
Wikipedia goes on to say american navy was only strong enough to effectively end piracy in 1846!
Boom!
