joe i thought this was interesting, wonder how the Chinook where utilizing the materials
more at this link
Chinook and Clatsop Relationship with US - Maritime Fur Trade

Maritime Fur Trade 1792 – 1805 Chinook Encounter New Trading Partners
captain Robert Gray
He hopes to establish a reasonable trade on the Columbia for furs to trade in
China. He had already witnessed a significant
increase in prices further north along the coast, from the absurdly low cost
of a sea otter pelt for a chisel in 1787, to paying
four times that within a few years. In 1792, “a skin now cost him roughly
a ‘blanket’; four skins, a pistol; and six, a musket"
(Fiske, cited in Ruby and Brown 1976:43).

During their nine days within the homeland of the Chinook,
the Columbia’s crew carries on a brisk trade with the locals.
Some trade values from Boit’s log:
2 Salmon = one nail
roots
4 sea otter skins = 1 sheet copper
1 beaver skin = 2 spikes
'land' furs = 1 spike

The time frame for trade ,matches up well,
But thats about it, i can find any examples what they did with the copper sheet, that would be interesting,
I dont think it is the place origin though, this place came from saint eustache quebec,
Chinook are pacific coast?
Ive read of manys trade boats going down the saint laurence and stopping in montreal, st eustach is 1 hr from montreal.

Ok ,i did some reading today, and came up with another theory of origin, again a pirate theory.
Perhaps, Benito Bonito potuguese 1818,
Or there are others , William Thompson,
Pirates of the Cocos Islands of puerto rico.
Anyone ever hear about the Treasure of Lima Peru
The treasure of lima peru 1820, during the peruvian wars of independance was sent to mexico, but never made it!
Cocos islands are very close to ecuador, peru, bolivia.
Aparently the treasure of lima was hidden on cocos island, and there are other claims of pirates burying treasure on cocos island.
To me seems like the island has a heart shape, the older the map the more of a heart shape the island has, it reminds me alot of my medalion,

That is awesome!!!
In my opinion, very rosary-like.
There are things called chaplets, which are used to keep track of prayers like rosaries, but have different numbers of beads.
This could be a homemade chaplet.
The "crucifix" definitely looks like Christ to me. The cloth, feet together, arms outstretched.
The heart could be the Sacred Heart of Jesus, or the Immaculate heart of Mary.
It does look like the island. Cool.
Good luck!!

Looking at it, if it was a rosary, that whole top part, which would be on the back of the neck, could have been added. Or it could have been worn around a waist.
How many beads are between the larger beads? Is it the same or different?

A heart with three dots, scroll back one page, i reposted the picture, and typed up my treasure of lima theory

Ok I remember, the Sacred Heart, sorry. The thread got so long, I forget.

Interesting theory on the heart shaped island but I just dont think its a treasure map. I think thats wishful thinking. I kinda hate to point this out, but there is no reason to even think pirates were involved, unless you are holding something back or Im missing something. This is a hand made Catholic religious item, with silver coinage, that was used as legal tender throughout the Americas, not only by pirates, but by common citizens from all walks of life, even in Quebec! I think its just a cool necklace made sometime after the 1840s from circulated coinage, picked at random. But a very cool mysterious necklace that may have been made from older material.

That may be a one of a kind Catholic medallion and we may never find a match. That cool about the island thou. Keep searching for a match on the medallion.

Did you ever conclude what kind of string it is? I have an old Jade necklace with similar string. Maybe Ill post pics. Unfortunately mine has rotted and broken in a few places and some beads are falling off. My string is whiter.

Pretty much concluded mine is hemp.
Aslo, 150 beads total,
There are some pirate theorys i posted before maybe you missed...
At the very least it could be as you described,
At the very least....
To many unique aspects, and coincidences, for me to think it was a comon religious chaplet or trade neclace.
