What are you trying to tell me?
What does it mean if it is common cotton cordage?
They did they have that 200 years ago?

Yes... they did.
But cotton does not last as long as hemp...
Nor is cotton as strong as hemp.
But this means nothing really... yes it could have bee originally strung on cotton ... but IF original... THIS would be in really good condition.

NOW... with all my jibber jabber... I will continue to jib and jab by saying this...
It is totally possible that at some point in this pieces past / history...

That is may have been "re-strung" at some point.
IF ever broken... this would be.

Also I might add...
Cotton was ten times the price of hemp. minimum.
Actually closer to 20 times more costly.

ALL parts of an item "tell" something... even if nothing... if that makes sense.

Like forensics man.

The beads tell no story with out a KNOWN example... and KNOWN exact composition...
If I were you...
I would do some searches on "trade items" / "trade necklace".... use keywords in conjunction.

I would research but my hands are full with grilled cheese and chicken noodle soup :P

Thanks for that link, "fur trade very interesting"
Those keywords bring up some nice stuff i havent seen before. I wish my library had that Lar Hothem book . its hard to find these photos.. I have noticed in many many pictures of Native americans ,they prominently wear jewlery with coins ! Im shure the owner of my necklace would have worn it , and perhaps i will find it in a photo with someone wearing it, then i will truly identyfy it.

Were it rawhide or sinew at least native or replicated native could be suspect.
Artificial sinew is a recent development ,but looks authentic.
Cotton would not be desired vs hemp due to wear and general durability issues.
As a chunk of cordage cotton has other/better uses , and while you use what you can get.... make it tough ; or risk losing beads.
Beads worn against skin get oiled however lightly. Those not touching will not show the same patina.
Linen and hemp existed during the fur trade era ,prior to it ,milkweed and hemp fibers were two of those used by natives.
Identifying what the beads were strung on may or may not help date the piece.
If it could another feature of the piece could follow examination.

Some of th small beads around the back neck area shine alot more like gold , there is defenilty differnt colors metal, different patinas, and polish/wear. Color difference npt as evident in the photos unfortunatly

I'd test or have the coins tested for silver.
Not saying it is a modern piece...yet , but the great variety is starting to make me wonder about authenticity of it's components.

An example of a fur trade double bar cross shows a heart.

I know coins im 100% certain coins are real, many coin experts have also been shown the peice and concur. There mostly impresed the coi s arent clipped. Who would make a fake 1 real coin ?
Its not a variety of bead types . It is 143 unique hand made beads,

I dont know beads,or native artifacts, and i see crude religious icons/pendants often. I wouldnt have bought the peice if it werent for those coins.
