:icon_sunny: Nice find - hope it's a 90%er - I've seen 40%ers like that before, so you never know! :icon_sunny:

Your will power is far stronger than mine when it comes to silver in a roll. I'm amazed I was able to take a picture of my double silver dime roll last week. The last time I found a 90% in a box (July 28th 2011) I panicked and dumped the entire roll on the floor. The sound that coin made when it his the floor was pretty awesome, however! How's the rest of that box?

90%er, but I've been fooled by BU 40%ers plenty of times.

Hope it's a Franklin or Walker!

Looks 90%, but as said before, some BU 40% edges look like 90%.

I am going against the grain here, i'm saying a trick coin.

I hope it's a 90% commem. for you! Good luck.

Dok, it was the only silver in the roll.

Plenty of people on this forum say they tell a 40% from a 90% half dollar.

I can't and I doubt they can either.

The outer part of a 40% half dollar is 80% silver.

The color difference between 80% and 90% is small and easily fooled by dirt on a 90%er or a shiny 40%er.

They have a fifty/fifty chance of getting it right but I bet a rigorous test would should plenty of errors.

HH!!

I can on some of them. Like all US Clad coinage, sometimes the middle clad layer sticks out a lot, and other times it is very thin to non-existant. On those silver clads that have a lot of the middle 21% silver showing I'm able to see the tarnish on the 21%, which is much darker than the outer 80% layer.

I would say I can tell from the edge 98% of the time whether its a 40% or a 90% (assuming of course that it is not a filthy half in which the edge is really dirty). Most 40% have a clad-like look on the rim. Not the copper color like the true clad, but a two tone silver look whereas 90% do not have this two tone look.

The most difficult ones are casino halves as some of those actually will look like post-1970 clad (copper color and all)... I think I have even had 90% casino halves that have looked like post-1970 clad. Since I don't find too many casino halves, the reason I say 98% of the time is that occasionally a 40% will appear without the two tone look due to its particular metallic make up that it will look like a 90% from the edge. Also note that pre-1964 90% silver halves are typically more worn on the rims which is another give away. Other than casino halves I don't think I have seem many 40% halves that have looked particularly worn.

Similarly, I can tell the difference between US silver dimes and canadian dimes and canadian silver dimes by the edge with the occasional exception of the really worn silver dimes where the reeded edge has worn off. I can still usually tell even in those instances, but not always.

And the one I think is odd that I can usually tell by looking at the reverse of pre-1960 nickels whether it is from the 40's or 50's and on some dates I can almost always tell from the front if the coin what the mintmark will be (1955 is one example). I can't exactly explain what I see that is different, but the 1940's Denver (non-silver) nickels have a distinctive look about them as do many of the San Fransisco nickels from 1947-1953. Do I claim to be perfect with nickels? No, but it is interesting what types of patterns the brain sees without even realizing it after looking at enough examples.
