Depends on what you really think is buried. From what I hear in this thread, the expectation is that these are "treasure vaults." No idea what anyone stashes in one of these because no one has ever shown or talked about one that's actually been recovered. But let's assume the targets are big -- gold bars, chalices, candlesticks, bells, and the like -- and not small -- gold dust, placer nuggets, etc. So you want a detector with extreme depth on big targets.

The XP Xtrem Hunter might do the job; I've never used one and can't say. I do know that I was never all that impressed with the Garrett Eagle Eye attachment on a GTI2500, but the Deus 2 is a better detector out of the box. For remote areas where trash is minimal and mineralization is a problem, I would go with PI. The best off-the-shelf PI for big deep targets is probably the Minelab GPZ 7000, although some of the "big loop" PIs (Lorentz, Pulse Star, etc) might do as well. Since I design detectors, I would probably design my own exactly tailored for the conditions.

If there is hope that the treasure vault contain a decent amount of iron then a magnetometer would be an even better option. A really good utility fluxgate mag (Schonstedt) might do the job, or you may need a more expensive geophysics mag (PPM or cesium).

There's P.I kits on ebay for fairly cheap Ive talked about buying and trying to mod out that I think a guy could custom make a taylor made metal detector out of. Its the programming of the module that scares me off, you have to build or buy that software.
Have you looked into them? Probably not just asking.

They did put stuff up in the cliffs I know they did in the caballos for sure.

Below it you can see what looks like a dug out flat area, I went up there expecting to find old native camps or houses or something and what I found was natural layers of rock and dirt missing from erosion. No markers, nothing.
That cross though, is it natural or man made, looks man made to me, thats not a small cliff and that picture is cropped down so you know.

Unless you have decent knowledge of electronics and access to an oscilloscope, I would not recommend a kit. I run the Geotech forums (metal detector designers) and we constantly get people who try to build a kit and it doesn't work. Besides that, most of the kits are for beach detectors and don't have ground balance, which you'll probably need.

Try to find someone to borrow a detector from, or see if you can rent one. I rented a GPZ 7000 in Australia because I didn't want to drag mine over there. Maybe there are US dealers who will do the same.

Awesome info thanks. Ill be heading down under soon hopefully I'll get the chance to explore the gold fields, Im very excited I haven't been there in over 30 years.
I think my DIY metal detector and GPR fascination just died..
