Relic Hunting
It was a great day for me! The weather could not have been any more perfect for some Colonial digging with the guys. We actually visited three different farms today. :laughing7: The first field we hunted was a site that Kyle and Chris found last week. Kyle got an early large cent there and some old pottery sherds, but nothing else. After we hunted it again today, that was all the site gave up. It must have been a poor settler. :laughing7:

The second field produced my best find for the day. Once I got the signal and pinpointed, I knew there had to be a copper in the ground. I flipped out a decent King George III Irish halfpenny (1766-1782). I was totally ecstatic with the find because it is my first ever Irish copper that could be identified. It was probably a stray drop from a hunter back in the Colonial days because we did not get anything else. :dontknow: :icon_scratch:

The last field we visited for the day gave me a handful more of Colonial artifacts. The recent flood that we had exposed more of the field and brought out some decent signals. :dontknow: I was picking up Colonial pottery every step of the way. ;D We decided to head to the section of the field that Kyle and Chris found about seven Colonial buttons back in November. It was not long in the small iron patch that I got a nice signal and excavated a piece of a Colonial shoe buckle. I was pumped! :headbang: Even though it was broken, I think I gave Kyle a "High-Five." :laughing7: I love digging them and could do it all day. Not too far away, I found two coppers. The one is a definite Colonial. It is probably a King George II. The other one is very puzzling. Since this site gave up strictly Colonial artifacts, I am assuming it is another Colonial-era copper. :icon_scratch: :help: Sometimes I see what looks like a ship and other times I see what looks like Brittania. :dontknow:

To end the day, I invited Kyle over for a Colonial dinner and some great coffee. :hello2: He should be arriving soon, so I hope you all enjoyed my post.

Keep the passion high!

Kirk :hello:

I can see the smile on your face everytime one of those coppers appeared! Congrats on getting a Hibernia and a 3 copper hunt is always a most satisfying feeling. Hope you can see some details eventually to positive ID the third copper!

Congrats on your Hibernia Kirk! Its good to see the colonial enthusiam on the Pa. frontier :) You're going to need to purchase an 18th century sailors chest to put all those treasures in. Also it looks like you need to have a little mercy on your digging partners with all those coins you're digging! :headbang:

Sweet hunt, Kirk. Three coppers is a great way to start the year.

So, when you get coppes in that condition, what do you do with them? Use a little oil or beeswax?

I have coins just like that which I've had for 10 years and haven't changed a bit. If you used anything, use Renaissance wax, not bees wax. R. wax is clear and will usually dry to give a similar look.... but as I said in my opinion you'd be doing something that is totally unnecessary.

Thats a good hunt in anyones book! Nice job!

Nice coppers especially the Hibernia :icon_thumleft: Congrats Kirk
