My brother found this coin about a week or so ago along some train tracks in upstate NY. I have seen a 1750s George II and an 1820's George IV coin he has pulled from the same general area.

He said this coin cleaned very easily and was at the same depth as the George coins.

It is about 25-26 mm and 10g. I haven't tried to google it yet - does anyone recognize it?

He said he just rinsed it with water and a little mild soap. I have seen his other finds and usually by his cleaning methods there is still dirt remaining.

He said he was surprised how easily it cleaned up b/c he only has experience with the old coppers and they never come out like this. :dontknow:

I think I am going to have to hunt that spot! :D

Thanks IS! That reverse looks good :icon_thumleft: I think the obverse lettering might fit the Diocletian better. :icon_scratch:

I have no clue :laughing7: It has a good feel to it and the weight seems right. But I have no experience with Roman coins to be able to tell.

it might just be me but, it looks like in the OP, the designs are pressed into the coins, and in the photo the designs were stamped on. if that makes sense.

OP: design set into coin. Pic: design protruding from coin

Looks real to me, real in the sense it's not a modern fake.

If it's not a fake it has to be a recent drop. It's copper. We all know how copper comes out of the ground...if it's not protected by a dark green patina it corrodes to hell. Real or fake, I'm calling a more recent drop.

I'm going to go along with real but recently lost. Roman coins, mostly bronze which this looks to be, are being found by the bucketfull all the time in other countries and are sold on Ebay among other places very cheaply. 2-3 bucks apiece for uncleaned coins and only a little more for decent examples. Most any coin show will have a couple dealers with bowls of them priced at under 10 bucks each for nice clean coins as well. I'm betting it's real and some kid lost it while out walking the tracks.

Thanks everyone! Pretty wild :D I'm going to get more details from my brother about it - FWIW. I'll update if I get any new info.

Where is Crusader?
Why :icon_scratch: we know it's Roman, it's just the question of fake or real, no way of telling from a picture :)

I realize how you feel about pictures SS but Crusader can (usually) judge (real or fake) pretty good from picture alone. I would like to hear his opinion because I dont know.
