Hi everyone. I made one more trip to the park with the sidewalk to nowhere on Friday.
I say "one more trip" because I'll probably be winding down my detecting for a while, due to the fact that I'm changing jobs (my choice) and I'm going to need to focus on the new job for a while. Some of you commented that I'd been having a lot of fun and detecting a lot lately; that's easier to do when you've given your 3-weeks' notice (I gave them 3 because my job's a bit complex and required some extra time to handoff my duties to others).
Anyway, while this visit to the park wasn't my last - I'll still head over there when I have an hour to spare every so often - I do think that this was one of the last times for a while where I can spend 3 hours on a Friday detecting.
I only took a picture of the silver, but I set a new personal record by finding nine (9) silver coins on Friday! That includes a 1943-S war nickel; even though it's only 35% silver it still has that magical effect of coming out of the ground just as silvery as the day it was dropped, so I count it in the total.
Also in the haul:
- 1943 quarter
- Mercury dimes from 1917, 1917, 1935, 1940 and 1944
- Roosevelt dimes from 1958 and 1962.
If anyone's interested (either to celebrate with me or to grumble about my luck), this brings my total number of silver coins found at this park to forty-six (46), along with two silver rings (one a KiddieGem - but still silver) and one gold-filled (GF) 1/20th 10K ring. I count that as "special" since it had some real gold (maybe $2.00 worth) on it.
Speaking of gold, I've been skipping a lot of mid-tones when digging at this park, but I plan to go back and dig them in the future. I know my "competition" (see post recap below) and they focus on high tones, so I've been focused on them too. Those brothers don't tend to dig the mid-tones (because they don't like pull tabs and foil), so I think any gold in the ground is safe for now.
Thanks to everyone for all the kind words and encouragement this year as I've posted - over and over - about this field. Oh, I included some pictures of the field below because in a different thread someone asked for them so they could envision where I've been digging. The "sidewalk" is at the red arrow and the most recent finds were from the orange arrow area. I'm not planning to spend much time in the sports fields because a) people are more likely to frown on digging in a sports field [I've been digging in unused fringe areas of the park] and b) the land in those areas was heavily modified in the 1980's to build those fields. The final picture shows "No Trespassing"; that's at the back fringe of the park, which adjoins the property where the school/camp/convent used to be. Those buildings are in disrepair but may be torn down and the land redeveloped.
I hope to find another park like this one someday, but I realize how rare it is to find a virgin park with so many good things to find, and I'm thankful for having found this one.
