Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

Not too great of a day today, but I found another SC seal button, though not in great shape. I was short on time today (I slept in), so I hit the 1830 CW house that I was hunting earlier in the year, because it is closer to home. As soon as I got there it started to rain, and continued during my whole hunt. :'( Cold & windy too. :tongue3: I think you guys up in Ohio sent this weather down here. :icon_scratch: :D
I could use some help on IDing a few things, so if you want to take a stab at it, I would greatly appreciate it.

My finds:
*South Carolina state seal button (23mm) - Albert's book #SC 13.
Back mark- "Schuyler. H & G - New York"

(Nick- I was hoping this was an eagle button when I dug it. :'( )

*21mm flat button with "Gilt" back mark.

*Scabbard tip???? Maybe? I have no idea. :icon_scratch:

*Lobster claw looking copper piece.
Any ideas?

*A heavy lead alloy piece with iron loop attached. Looks like a plumb bob?
Any idea?

*Copper hollow bead (?) with a cross design & solder mark on one end.
Any idea?

*"M. W. & Co." padlock keyhole cover

* A small square coin weight (circa 1600-1850's) representing 4 pennyweight by the 4 dots on it. It has a tiny animal (horse?) design on it.
I've found these before at old properties, but never with a design on them.
Here's an informative link:
http://www.ourpasthistory.com/metal/trade-weights

*Asst'd: pocketknife, razor handle, spoon handle w/flower design, lead pieces.

Thanks for looking & any help,
MM

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

MM I would love to have a day like yours. Most of your stuff I have no idea what it is, except it's all cool stuff. I'm real curious about the cylinderical brass thing.
Keep em coming, you're on a run. You must have a whole bucket of whatcha callits.

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

Great stuff MM. Your posts make me itch to go relic huntin'.....and I've never relic hunted before.

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

Doug,
You taking after those old timers and sleeping in?! :laughing7:

Yeah, we sent down that good old Frozen Lake Erie breeze for you today. Nate and I were at the Cleveland State Orientation and we drove by the lake. One of the Great Lakes - Lake Erie. Ice as far as the eye could see. :sad1: The wind was blowing hard off the lake so you know what temperature it was here? Yep, a sweet 0 C ! Ugh. It was cold. But us die hards toughed it out for a couple hours after the orientation. 8) We made some respectable finds..... will post tomorrow.

As for your finds - not that bad. Some nice buttons and relics. :) Keep at it. That LC is just one hunt away!

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

O.K. Folks. The Mighty PBK did it again!!! Robfinds also was able to ID it. Thanks guys!
They have ID'd the little square piece with the animal on it as an old weight. I think mine with the four dots represents 4 pennyweight.
I suggest that a lot of you relic hunters (and others interested in learning) take a look at this VERY interesting web site link that PBK found. It has questions, answers, history, and pictures of various weights through the ages. A great read. You will see my style of weight about 3/4th down the page on that link.
I personally have found four or five of these weights now, but never knew what they were until now. I have to go look to see if I even kept my others now. :icon_scratch:
Have any of you others ever found any of these?
Here's the link:

Thanks for looking,

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

Doug, the trade weights and apothecary weight info has been posted before I think. Here is a webiste that is also useful for IDing British Artifacts, and this section is for weights found in England.

http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/C/coinweights.htm (weights)

http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/F/findsindex.htm (all finds)

I found a Apothecary weight a couple years ago.

Your triangle lock is possibly the oldest artifact you found, I cannot tell from the photo but it is somewhat similar to the oldest lock I have found. (1600's) I cannot find a photo of mine right now, nor the website, but will post it when found.

Miner, you always find the coolest, most challenging things to I.D. :D
(Maybe I'll find a three-ringer when I visit my daughter in SC this summer)
Take care & HH!

Thanks WC. Good luck on the 3-ringer. If you're going to SC, there will be plenty there for you.

Don,
Thanks so much for the info on the weights & lock, and providing those two links. Now I know where Crusader gets his ID info from. :D  (just kidding Crusader) . :D

I bookmarked that site for future finds.
As far as the lock, I would have never guessed. I almost chucked it into the weeds. :o That is so cool knowing what it is and especially how old it could be. This is the same property that I found that counterfeit piece of eight at. Looks like the finds are dating back way further than that 1830's house. That's great news for me. I hadn't hit that property in about two months since I've been MDing a plantation house recently. A lot of new signals are popping up for me again as you can see. Maybe there's a reale or LC left there? :icon_scratch:

If you get time, please post the pictures of the one you found. Here's a few more shots of mine.
Thanks again,
Doug

Your new photos now have me wondering if it is a lock? :icon_scratch:

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

Nice buch o' relics Doug, those buttons are great! I never knew there were so many kinds of buttons until I started reading about them on posts like this..they have their own history and it seems like they're as much fun to find as finding old coins.

Seeing the one you found in a book is so cool..I had no idea so many varieties could be dated similar to other types of artifacts.

WTG and keep up the good work!

Thanks Nat. I have really taken an interest in these old buttons, and have purchased three button books so far. A lot of history with them. I have a pretty nice button collection going in short time I've been digging them up. What's funny is I hardly find any that are duplicates, so that should tell you how many different varieties there were.
I recently bought some coin books too, but seem to find way more buttons than old coins.
Have a great week,
MM

Ancient earring? Medieval fishing sinker? :D Heck, I'll take anything. :D
Seriously though, do you think it may have been used to check the depth of something like water in the well ? Attach a string possibly and lower it down to check the level.
That's my uneducated guess anyways. :tongue3:
Thanks Don.

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

Awesome persistence doug, they must have just mowed over there because it was getting a little shaggy when i was there.

Keep those learning goodies coming.

I found a 1943D merc in cary today, not near as exciting as your finds though.

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

That is a good haul of nice finds Doug. Congrats on that nice button.

Congrats Bill.
These finds were from the Morrisville house, not the plantation. The grass was mowed & low when I was there.

Re: Another SC seal button & a bunch of ?????

MM,

You're KILLING me with those SC buttons!!! WOW!

I've been offline here for a few days...dang, I missed seeing some great stuff! I also missed ID'ing that weight for you. :P Oops. I dunno about the scabbard tip-looking piece. I'm not convinced that it is one, but I can't rule it out for sure. So, it sounds like there was an even-earlier structure on the site perhaps? WAY COOL!

Regards,

Buckleboy

BB,
That's o.k., I'll let you off the hook this time. That weight was a cool find for sure. Great things come in small packages.
