It's looking towards the south...a cross carved on a boulder was busted in half with the crack going threw the cross seven miles away to the north/east of this marking...

The character on the rock is 東 which means east in both Japanese and Chinese.
For future reference for the OP and others finding this by google search etc:

North is 北， South 南， East 東 （simplified Chinese) 东， West 西

In Japanese, they are read as:

• 北 (きた, kita)
• 南 (みなみ, minami)
• 東 (ひがし, higashi)
• 西 (にし, nishi)

In Mandarin Chinese, they are pronounced as:

• 北 (běi)
• 南 (nán)
