I usually dig up big signals and get a lot of copper, lead, and brass junk. Is it worth the trouble to clean up and sell? Does anyone know if salvers buy this kind of thing? I see that copper is over 3 dollars a pound and lead is at approx 1 dollar...(I know how to sell gold, but I keep coming up with this stuff instead) :icon_scratch:...thanks for any info.

If it is a big piece of scrap metal or something that is really heavy or a pick up truck load of smaller things like what you got,etc then you can make some money but not a killing unless you got like 30,000 pounds of scrap metal than that could get a good amount of money for it, but I don't know what the values of everything is @ the scrap yard but I do see lot of pick up trucks that are loaded with scrap metal making V lines for the scrap yard bout everyday! good luck!

yeah i save all the brass and other junk i find keep saving it up brass is down right now i have about 20 pounds im saving im just gonna keep adding to it until the price goes back up

the only thing i dont keep is aluminum, i dig so much darn aluminum and its only near about 50 cents a pound around here. The brass, copper, and lead are worth more and if you manage a 5 gallon pail filled with any of the three, you got some nice bucks there, and then turn it into silver by buying your favorite coins with it like it do! good luck

I read once that a guy saved all his scrap in 5 gallon buckets until he had enough to take in, and got himself $216 if I remember correctly.

That's pretty good for stuff we generally toss in the trash...

I save mine and give it to whoever is headed to the scrap yard. I don't get any money out of it, but I can't stand the thought of throwing that stuff in a landfill. It'll be there till the end of days.

I have 5 gallon buckets in my shed for lead; copper; yellow brass and red brass, Have pounds and pounds of everything. Used to get most of it from the old army bases and naval air stations in Florida. It will be one of my retirement/401k supplemental projects.

I separate by metal type and return at the end of the year.

well, for me, yes, I scrap all that I find, but digging isn't the only time I find scrap metal, so, any time I am out and about, digging or otherwise, if I come across abandoned metals, i snatch em up. You won't get rich, true, but you won't get a thing...not even a little if you don't pick it up and collect it when you find it. I know of times when I wasn't working, had no income except for scrap metals. Some people take the attitude of saying, instead of picking up bits of metal that might be worth a little, just get a second job, which is fine, but if you don't need a second job...and you like to find things worth a little...for free, then, do it. If you 'tune' yourself to collect scrap, you'll just do it without it seeming like it is a whole lot of work. What you are finding there, if it is all the time, you should be able to get a nice little pocket liner I would think. Why not? You dug it, it's worth a little...get a little....hell, buy yourself a Pepsi and a burger or turn the money over to silver or supplement your gas tank. Everything has potential. Use it.

I keep it that's one of the things I did to buy my CTX I took about 9-10 years of scrap I dug in

Recycle, recycle, recycle. I'm like a lot of the others, I try to seperate it all into 5 gal. buckets and turn it in at the end of the year, or the next time I run our crushed soda cans to the scrap yard. I figure if I'm going to dig it, put it in a pouch and carry it around all day, I may as well get a few cents for it as opposed to tossing it in a trash can to be hauled to a land fill somewhere. If you think about it, a lot of those chunks of brass and copper (even the aluminum adds up) are worth more than those stinkin' Lincolns that most of us dig and put back into circulation. I don't sell my good finds, and my clad goes to my son's savings, so my recycling/scrap pile is the slow but steady way to pay for my detecting habbit.....whoops....I meant detecting hobby.

And it is good for Mother Earth, and buys batteries as well :)

Win=Win

Yes! I clean it all up to investigate everything (I have had MANY good finds found in my junk bin!). Once a year I got and make close to 150.00 on brass and copper recycling. Wish I could find someone to take the lead. I know I have 40lbs of it here.

Many folks say that they only save the big stuff... Well, most of the weight of what I turn in each year comes from all the small stuff.

Recycle it. Otherwise you're throwing free money away. And we should be investigating all the bits anyhow, to see if there is a good find hiding in there. Why not save and recycle them after the dirt is gone?

Yea they take anything i save all my pieces, i usually get about $50 per week....

i save the copper and the brass. i give all the other scrap to my buddy.

I paid for Christmas with old bronze and aluminum. over $300.00 worth. I took a bunch of aluminum and stainless just last week and cleared another $82.50. pays for gas and whatever, plus it helps the environment too.

I save it all, even the pull tabs! Garage has a container for brass, one for lead, cooper, and a bucket for alum. Its all $$$$$ at the scrap yard. I just cant justify digging a hand full of pennies, and saving them, then throwing away three times that amount, in scrap metal:icon_scratch:

Well said.

You dig it, take it home because you don't throw it back in the field, clean some of the stuff to investigate why not sell it?

5 gal buckets for copper, brass, wire, lead, and a trash can for alum. In the shop... Clear a couple hundred a year. Treasure is treasure!
