have you never heard of a laptop and expedia? or travelocity?

Of course, but you keep making it sound like you're just going to drive and hope for the best.

I am just too OCD to not have plans for a trip like that. I don't think I have ever booked a hotel the night I needed it. Tickets, events, activities are always planned in advanced and if my family would allow me, I would schedule something for every hour of the day when we are on vacation.

well excuuuuuse me! aren't you just a bucket of fun!

8-) hold on a sec. are you FBI? or Homeland security? I'm not answering anymore questions without seeing your ID. I know my rights

Oh whatever, goof.

there are thousands of hotels along the beach

bbcamay,

It's a guy thing.....planning things out just confuses us and takes all the fun out of it.....when guys goes on a vacation solo.....it's kind of like a blind date....just go with the flow....lol.

I just can't fathom going somewhere 17-18 hours away from home for vacation with no definite plans on where I will be staying or what I'll be doing.

Where will you stay? You'll just get a hotel room that night and not book it ahead of time?

Lol, the sad part is that I actually get excited thinking about planning out a vacation like that. I would totally carry a clipboard if I could!

It sounds like fun but the concept is so foreign to me. I would have already mapped out local attractions to see throughout my drive etc.

Bill...Thanks I will be ordering a copy.

Also just to understand this better. When you arrive at the beach, what kind of signs do you look for to choose where to begin hunting.
If the tide is high do you head for the dry sand and hit the wet sand at low tide? Are you looking at how the waves are hitting the beach, ie.. the water is coming up higher in some areas than others? Do you concentrate on areas where people would have their blankets etc..out? Our water here is cold. I guess what I'm asking is do you actually try to read the beach, and if so, what are you looking for?

Scoop is too modest. He is an expert on sand and reading the beach. I don't know the link but I have heard rumors that he has a good, less expensive book for sale that will answer all your questions as well. Also, look back at any of the previous threads where Scoop has talked about Sand. There is a TON of good information there.

The beach is a living organism, it breathes sand. There is no easy answer to your question. My best suggestion is to find out the next time Scoop is going hunting and stalk the living heck out of him.

bbcamay,

You and my wife would hit it off big time....I can cram a weeks worth of clothing in a carry on bag....on the other hand she needs a steamer trunk.....she's big on clip boards also.....heck I've even got an inner city pub I visit and the regular barmaid Melanie is an Aries like my wife and she watches me like a mother hen....me thinks I'm out numbered....lol

And Melanie has an attitude that makes me look like a cream puff and a blond to boot.....frankly I don't think I stand a chance.....heck I might join jeff on that road trip going nowhere for a respite.....here's a picture of my buddy from the hood with the fire in her eyes....be afraid... be very afraid...

time for an idiot abroad. good night Bill, good night bbcamay ( bill explain to bb what goodnight means)

Keys. Camping gear. MDing gear. Full ice chest. Endless passages. That's all we men need. We don't want to know what's between points A & B, we want to let it surprise us, just sit back and take it all in one relaxing breath at a time. Do you think those Spanish explorers knew what laid ahead of them? Do you think they sent carrier pigeons ahead and made reservations? No! They simply loaded their ships and set sail to the horizon. You go, Jeff, eye patch, bandana, Arg! :icon_thumleft: :laughing7:

PS: And don't shave! If you shave it takes away from the whole pirate effect, disturbs the karma. Scruffy is good when you're cruising in your ship, breeze blowing across your squinting eyes/eye, can't ignore the karma that comes with a real pirate adventure. :laughing7:

sent you a PM with link to a bunch of articles I wrote - some may help you - some may inspire you

Jeff,

I've found a theme song for you pending trip....this one should do the trick.

Good advice scoop, besides the shorties like scruff

thanks, I'll read carefully

bbcamay,

Here's an example of winging it on vacation guy style....true story....first vacation to Barbados....bunch of crazy single guys....bought the ticket ahead of time....just threw a bunch of clothes and accessories together at the last minute...

Get off the plane and it's like a blast furnace....cab it to the resort....mid afternoon and unpack...oops forgot to pack shorts and/or swimsuit......minor annoyance look around the kitchenette....find a pair of scissors and cut of the legs of my jeans....voila now I have a combo shorts/swimsuit....lol.

Off to the beach for a dip and a few cold ones.....heck I think I started a trend....convinced pretty much everyone I met to do the same thing....then we could recognize each other from a distance.

See it's not that hard.

Regards + HH

Bill
