Big cats in East TN

I learned to tie them all but prided myself on the S/k,was taught by the best in all of Mexico,Mr.Ice and Joe Z..........a true art tieing, especially Filipino style!!!
BOY,HOWDY ! I was good at raisin and conditioning , but it took better skilled hands than mine to tie and handle in the pit .
Had an Arkansas Traveler that spurred my wife so many times that she gave my son $15 to bet against him when we took him to a big fight in Jackson . His revenge was to win 3 fights and come home alive .

Cockfighting is a very popular "sport" in the South. I never believed in it and view it the same as dog fighting.

"...but they are nothing n the same....not even remotely close."

I don't have a lot of knowledge about either one. What am I missing?

KINGSTON, Tenn.-- A big cat sanctuary in Roane County, Tenn., is accusing neighbors of a campaign of harassment meant to drive the enterprise out of business.
The claims are part of a $2 million countersuit filed this week by Tiger Haven Inc. after neighbors in June filed a $10 million suit against the sanctuary.
Neighbors allege the sanctuary has destroyed the quiet enjoyment of their properties and that waste runoff from the more-than 250 lions, tigers and other big cats there has contaminated adjoining land.
The complaint seeks to shut down the 50-acre sanctuary or at least prevent operators from acquiring any more neglected, abandoned or abused cats.
Dandridge attorney Doug Drinnon represents Tiger Haven. He told the Knoxville News Sentinel the sanctuary operates legally.

Kuger...
I think it is shame a guy who has dedicated his life to the study of the mountain lion has never had the chance to hear one scream. I am a resident of the Sierras, and served with the Sheriff's Office here for 25 years. the first time I heard one scream I was about 12, and was outside with an uncle one evening about dusk, messing about with an old Model A truck. His house was about halfway up a mountain, and there was only one other residence on that mountain...above his.
The sound of a big cat screaming will raise the hair on the back of your head. Nothing like it on this planet. When we first heard it my uncle had an acetylene torch going, he shut it off instantly and we went to check on the horses. They were very upset, and had gathered in a enclosed area where we fed them. Eyes wides, ears back, freaked out. We went in the house and my uncle got his '06 off the wall, and called the neighbor up the hill.
The man's wife answered and said that that he he was out checking their sheep...they'd lost one the night before. He never found it. Hre saw the cat that noght and we saw it twice that summer. My uncle would have dropped it if he'd had a clear shot....this was 40 years ago mind you.
That cat came though that very area every summer for 3 years, and we heard it at least one or two nights a summer.
Then, when I was with the Sheriff's office, we had occasional calls of, "a woman screaming in the woods".
Mountain Lions, every time.
They are still around, and the population in this area is off the hook, I strongly suspect there is a certain amount of "unauthorized management" that takes place among the ranchers every year...but only if the cats go after livestock.

Sam...I could lie to ya and tell ya I have heard hundreds of em....:laughing7: but thats not my style :thumbsup:I am in good company of guys that are Legends that have not either, but those of you that have are very fortunate!! :notworthy:I have spent more time in a bedroll than my own bed,but the last 8 years since the birth of my first daughter my ratio is going the other way..LOL!Actually there is not as many rancher shot lions as you would think, its not all that hard to take care of the issue legally ....this is generally where I come into play. You also likely be shocked if I told you I have only witnessed 5 lions just out and about...not behind dogs, trapped,or collared. It is extremely rare to see lions and yes in California too......the great majority of sightings are not...I say this from fact,as lions dont fly and scent dont lie

.........I do need to add......In Calif. it is becoming less, and less UN-common for people to repeatedly see lions, and they think its,"Cool","Magnifcicant",.......while it may be,its not "good",or normal, its a sign that they are not afraid, are hungry,or desperate. There populations are rising unchecked, and their fear of humans is diminishing.People think we are encrouching on their habitat, while this is somewhat true, fact is lions are actuallycoming to us....people have more lush green land scape, deer(lions main food source)would rather feed on this than nasty ol rush in the hills, people also have dogs, that grow used to deer...not ever lions,so deer have food and "security",so they tend to not leave subdivisions etc.It is more common to see great numbers of deer here in town than in the Millions of acres of wilderness area's!There is no shortage of wilderness folks! The lions need to eat,and are forced to come in search for the deer...and in doing so,come acustomed to us.This is really dangerous because we as humans need predators to fear us,and the fact that lions are opportunists,a small child or even adult can be ,"on the menu"

No zoning.

" Chancery Court Judge Frank Williams ruled that the 9-acre Tiger Haven violates local zoning laws. It doesn't fit the surrounding area. The Parkers are appealing the decision."

I agree . It was disrespectful of us 'old farts' to go off on a tangent .
The Everything Else section seems so overwhelmed with gun threads that I think I will open a chicken fighting thread there . Give them all something more to argue while we keep up with this mountain lion issue .

when i was 15 me and my dad watched 2 lion cubs play in a field for about 15 minutes 2 months ago i was out walking in the woods behind my house and came across some lion tracks in the snow i always listen and watch out for lions and coyotes here ever since i had a pack stocking me one summer when i was out hunting ginseng. funny thing about it the DNR says there's no lions here in West Virginia and wolves are making a come back to seen 2 red wolves 3 years ago when i was out ginsenging they walked right up to me with in about 15 feet i yelled at them and they took off the DNR says there not here in the state either it pays not to listen to anything the DNR has to say

I have great respect for mountain lions; they are super quiet, powerful, and efficient killers. I once watched one chase down a deer down a mountain side while I was turkey hunting in Idaho; awesome!

They are around my area but I don't worry about them attacking me; I'm too big and wouldn't make a good target... My dad was hunting once and walked up a game trail with a slash pile about 30yds away at the end of a straight stretch. When he got to about 10yds from the pile when he noticed a big cat crouched on the top of the pile watching him. As soon as he spotted it, he swung up his rifle and the cat was gone.

They blend in incredibly well. Can you spot the mountain lion in this photo?

Howdy idowa,

He appears bayed, since he shows no interest in the photographer.

In my area I have never heard of a lion attack, even though we have plenty of them. I do walk with a limp, so yeah, I keep my eyes moving like a chameleon when I'm in the brush.

Yes these animals are magnificent , but as Tguns mentioned , they are predators and let’s not forget it and have someone think they can approach one or try to feed it..they are wild animals so give them respect and watch from a safe distance.
That said there are some very experienced people and great info and advice here already.

I was setting in my deer stand one morning and just as it was getting daylight I saw a Black Panther about 100 yards from me in a little clearing in the woods...I saw it again in full daylight about 50 yards from me.....When I saw it the second time it was a large black house cat. Funny how your mind will play tricks on you like that.

....,You would be amazed at how often that happens...your not alone!I had a gal call one night in a fit that a lion was attacking her horse...long story short,I was 45 minutes from her house and by the time I got there, her husband had shot the ...........neighbors cat. There was no lion tracks, and no evidence of any attack

Isn't it real comforting to know we have people around carrying firearms who can't tell the difference between a house cat and a animal the size of a mountain lion!!?

This picture probably explains a lot of it?:laughing7:
