Big cats in East TN

To all posters ,
It's necessary to understand that those of us in the Eastern Mountains , and country raised folks in many other places , are VERY sensitive about issues raised about their credibility . #9 said he saw a black lion . He's never given me cause to question his veracity , so I'll take him at his word . Kuger is an honorable man as well . He's spent a lifetime amongst the lions and has never seen one ...... Luck of the draw .
>Interesting thread that doesn't have to fall apart over perceived insults . Let's remain friends as we share information .

I wasn't insulted, I'm getting to old for the small stuff! HA! I've had great fun going back and forth with Kuger and others on this thread... so please view anything I've said on the lighter side!
The only thing I'm serious about is the cougar is in East Tennessee... the one I saw was shot and buried on Signal Mountain.
The black cat was seen twice, I'm guessing it was the same one. Pet? I don't know? I did get a good look both times!

Best to ya!

Now why in the hell then have you argued in circles!!!!!!I have not argued against one single point you just made in this post!!!!!All that you said is not only beleivable but highly likely!!!!!I am well aware of Jaguars here,I will let you in on a little something........I myself have seen a Jaguar in a tree right here in the US and it was wild.I beleive early on I discussed this fact in this very thread?I beleive I also told you early on about Michael Jacksons Black Cat?I also told you, that I felt you were very lucky,to have seen a black lion....you seemed to have taken offense to that...you are very fortunate,as Butch said,I have not been so fortunate,as have many legendary cat men!!!I or many of these same caliber men have never heard the sound people claim to have heard lions emit...a woman scream...am I going to tell you they dont do it?No!I have heard them breeding and I will tell ya,there was some screaming going on!!!I have seen lions do things that if I told you,you would not beleive me as well!! Hopefully we are on the same page #9?

Kugar...

"Now why in the hell then have you argued in circles!!!!!!"

Now Kugar, you know I don't argue... much. LOL!!

I'm sorry... I'll try and do better.. OK? We still friends?

I grew up in Tn an have tracked the cats many times. The rangers in the Smokies have been protecting them for years. There is or was a large population of them in Anderson Co. Check back issues of The knoxville News paper. The officials have been covering up their existence for years to protect them from being wiped out as would happen very quickly.

Kuger,

I have only heard the scream of the cougar once in my life. I had read about it on the Ben Lilly Legend, and it was stuck there in the back of my mind. It was 18 years later that I was fortunate enough to hear it.

I was repairing an old chicken coop that my father had made to house some gamefowl. It was just going to be a place to keep some rattlesnake boxes, and keep my kids out. One of my sons who was four at the time, was helping me when we heard the scream, maybe 200 yards away. I asked my son, "did you hear that"? He says "yes", then I asked him "what did you hear"? He says, "it sounded like a lady screaming". I told him, "that was a mountain lion son".

I have heard some recordings, and some on Youtube, but not quite like what we heard here. The closest I could find was a yellow tabby house cat on Youtube, titled "screaming cat". I don't know if you would want a house cat video here with the big cats.

I always wanted to hear it,spent enough dang time under the stars to,as well, just never did.....?I felt pretty sheepish about it and asked a friend and lion hunter Wiley Carrol about it,he wrote a good book about lion habits and interviewed many top cat men,he told me he never heard it and many other long time cat guys had not either....BUT,quite a few others had.It became something I made a point to ask cat men, through the years and some had some had not.The two breeding that night sounded like the coming of Haties,I was never scared of sounds in the night cause they are usually something you have heard before, and not loud(loud noises still rattle me)This was loud and shrill,I cant even describe the rukus!I have heard females whistle to their young and the sounds they make, thats pretty cool in its self! I think I mentioned it before but the lowly little fox....especially the Gray Fox makes a sound that was responsible for %90 of the lion sounds calls I ever got.The majority of the Youtube sounds I heard were fox's too,I am sure you know what they sound like though....I guess in short, you are a fortunate hombre,I want to hear that sound!!!!!

Kuger,

Ben Lilly's impairment from what I recall was attributed to his sleeping in damp ground. "The Ben Lilly Legend", and "Old Yeller" are two books that every young boy should read in my opinion.

Yes I still remember my Grandfathers fly pens, and a picture of a grey who had 15 wins. Helped my Dad for many years, and tied for one of my brothers. My work kept me from keeping my own. I had ordered some Democrats then got transferred, so I gave them to my brother. They turned out to be some of the best he had before a flood took every bird he owned.

My other passion is horse racing

I do hope you get to hear those cats scream some day.

I agree on the books . Ever meet Mr. Howard Harvey from Jackson,Ohio ? About the best breeder and trainer I ever met .

They are reintroducing certain species that where in this area (alabama) to repopulate predatory deer control
including black bears with cats and wolves

That is an urban myth.....I checked into that and was embarrassed for asking it.#1 To do such a thing is hugely irresponsible, and a MAJOR liability,if a person is harmed the state is instantly liable, and the onslaught of easy prey....livestock,would be over whelming. If any control is done, its generally through added hunting permits which generates revenue........introducing lions would bring nothing but headache

When it comes to state or federal government, I just don't put much trust in what they say they have, or haven't done.
They did put the wolf in the Smoky Mt. Park. They backed off talking about it after awhile, only to say the relocation didn't work.
But, the locals still see one now and then.

With the bear population growing, playing "musical chair" seems to be a common pastime for the boys in the green trucks.
With several trips made into the south section of the Ocoee Mountains... they even placed a few boar with them to add a little variety to the table fare.:laughing7:

Cats? Not sure? Many seem to think a few has been moved in under the cover of "darkness". More cats are being seen.

Major liability? We are talking about OUR government, right!?:laughing7:

Oh,dont get me wrong 9!!!!They dropped wolves in Montana before they ever talked about it,and its a long story but I personally caught them red handed dumping grizzlies into a Mtn. range that didnt have them....this being said......bears were already in the state, and the wolves were not to CONTROL anything(wolf attacks on humans vs lion attacks on humans is significantly different as well)You are seeing more lions because lions are very territorial, and wander, this on top of more and more states with great lion populations losing hunting of them, they are branching out!My old stomping grounds in western Montana, just 15 years ago was rife with lions, now there is a healthy wolf population and seeing a lion track is a rarity.....Eastern Mont. which never really had any lions now has them, and not many wolves if any......follow me?

Never had the pleasure, most of the fun we had was around our area, and there was plenty. The only legal action we participated in was when we would venture into Cajun country, maybe once or twice a year.

Sure do miss those good old days.

Gaff only, all though I did learn to tie the Philipino, we never used them. Favored the medium point jaggers.
