Button Spot hunt gives me a LARGE smile!

Hi and I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
JohnyMc and I snuck out Friday evening to TnT2000's button spot. John has been coaching college lacrosse full time and hasn't gotten out too much lately. We both got a couple flat buttons and each got a nice cufflink. We were just ready to leave and I got a great signal at 3 inches. I almost dropped over when I saw this 1797 large cent. It is in awesome condition and is the first large cent that I could plainly identify.

Saturday morning TnT and I got right back there. No coins, but lots of buttons and what I think (from seeing posts on here) is a change purse of some sort. Any help ID'ing would be appreciated.

Just saw this post today. WOWEEEE! Beautiful large cent, "common" or otherwise. Nice cufflink. And that coin purse is way cool. I bet some gold pieces in the $5.00 and $2.5 denominations would fit very nicely inside. CONGRATULATIONS.

Always amazes me about the very valuable, unique, fascinating, historical stuff that people on this forum can pull out of the ground. I'm telling you, treasure hunters are performing a service and we're not getting enough credit for the work we do. Keep 'em swinging.

Intresting Mark.

I'v never found one so complete.
But I do now believe it is a Change Purse.

it's unusual that it would be to carry .25
though. even if it dates to the early 19th. century.

Kind of big & Bulky for that.

The Gold coins Idea may explain it a little more.

Nice Gentleman's coin purse, circa 1880's by the look of the scroll work, maybe earlier. let us know if after you clean it, if you find any English or American Silver marks on that puppy. e-mail me and i will help you to identify the maker and its age.. CONGRATS ON THE GREAT FINDS

Hi Mark,
Wow... Excellent finds!! Quite exciting to find one of the first series of coins to be minted. The "coin purse" is actually a
"solid perfume" compact. In the late 1800's all the way up to the 1970's, solid perfume compacts were made. You can do
a Google search for solid perfume compacts, and see many examples of them. Back in the days, a lady would rub the solid
perfume into the little mesh disc's, so when she was traveling, she could just open the compact, rub her finger on the disc,
and put some perfume on her neck or behind her ear. I have seen quite a few of these compacts, but for one of that age, and to have
come out of the ground, it is in amazing condition. Again, congrat's on the excellent finds!

That's F for sure (Hair over brow smooth;some detail showing in other parts of hair)
