its a match safe --used to keep your matches dry ( in the deep woods trapping being able to make fire could be a life or death type thing )--the lids most likely stuck looks like a a screw on type

or it could be a lip stick tube * -- often they converted them to match safes --

Civil War era Confederate paint-ball projectile. Very rare and almost priceless.

lip stick wearing fur trapper -- thats a image out of a horror movie.--seriously might they have used lip stick as a sort of " chap stick" to prevent their lips from cracking I wonder ? -- and the empty tube would make a great match safe as well.

I promise,I wont say anything that will stir the Brits, but your trap is still used today, and can still be purchased easily.Trapping is deep seated in our history. My family made it through the depression trapping, and many many people made there living trapping for fur,and some still do

That idea came to me because I wanted a fool proof way to heat it up without being able to overheat it incase something inside it was explosive. I was just looking out for your safety. :icon_pirat:

Thank You to everyone and i look forward to posting my new finds. I have been taught 2 good lessons.

1. Just because you find a Lipstick tube 20 feet from a foot trap doesn't mean what you have is a bullet. Everyone and i mean everyone said it was a lipstick tube. Pretty funny it took me so long to go hum i wonder if there right.

2. Don't ask if foot traps are still legal. There are allot of people with strong feelings both ways, which i respect them all. That post went crazy.

What a cool site. I have not been at metal detecting very long but i love it even thou my family, friends and kids think I've lost my mind. i love being back in the woods and spend as much of my free time in the woods as i can.

I can't wait for the snow to melt so i can get back out.

Well said. Keep 'em coming. There are a billion small objects waiting to be found and it's not hard to come up with some real puzzlers. Imagine disassembling everything in your house, garage and barn and trying to identify all the metal pieces without knowing what they came off.

The soil of the U.S. is open and well traveled. You were in that spot, as have been many, many folks over the years. Soil is added, moved, eroded, graded, plowed. It gets pretty jumbled up. Just because a site has old activity does not mean everything in the soil is from the same period. In fact, that would be almost impossible.

PS - thta lipstick tube is from when silver was in circulation. Keep searching.

Here are some old lipstick tubes to compare. If you still feel that it is not one at least post dimensions or place a ruler for scale.

I found one of the tubes you have pictured here. in the right picture. the one farthest to the left with the loop design along the bottom. any idea who made it and when?
