I was thinking Whitworth at first, but I can't find any with rings. Can you post the underside and dimensions? Otherwise, congratulations on your lipstick tube. :-*

OK, maybe in person it looks different, but it sure does look like a lipstick tube by the pictures, even the right size. It is positively not a bullet. It appears to be hollow judging by the dents in it. Can you weigh it?

Maybe, by that description, it isn't a lipstick tube, but rather a tube of lipstick.

It is one solid piece.

Duffy, you can solve this in less than 2 mins. Did you do this? Take 2 pairs of pliers, pad them with a cloth, put one on the bottom at the rings, and the other on the middle, then twist the bottom. As you are twisting, pull. You may need a little WD-40 around the bottom ring area. After you finish, post what happened.

There's a possibility it could be an old pill container. There is no object (that size) I can think of with that shape that would be a solid piece. It has to come apart.

PS: Tired Iron, you keyboard is in the mail; lol

Breezie- I'm sure from the 1st pics it looked like a lipstick tube. It is a solid piece of brass. when i shake it you can hear what sounds like buck shot in it (could be pills). I want to cut it open to see what is inside but was hoping someone would know what it was before i cut it open. I agree its probably not a bullet because no markings or firing pin. Just wondering how they put something inside.

I really feel that this did open up at one time. I noticed that where it meets the rings in one spot it is crimped a little. Maybe thats why it is stuck shut? If there is something inside then it had to open. Like a pill container. I am sure it is a lip stick tube though.

I wouldn't cut it, but WD40 it, then twist. Since you hear something rolling around on the inside, it's probably a pills or either hardened dried up lipstick pieces & rust. Since lipstick is basically wax, it's more than likely old pills. Either way, it's a neat find! Breezie

Dirtymike and Breezie- I'm sure it is not a lipstick tube!!!!!! Last night i soaked it in WD40 I tried to open it with every tool I have and I think the hack saw is the only one that's going to get it open. I was thinking about putting it in a fire and standing way back but then that would burn whats inside. Maybe I will wait and see if someone else can figure it out.

I think that's a great idea. Good luck, Breezie

It would be a "cartridge" if it was a bullet still in place with the unfired case. And would be of two different metals (i.e. lead & brass).

If it was a "solid piece of brass" it would not rattle - it would be solid!

If it was a lipstick tube the dried lipstick inside would rattle - or an empty lipstick tube used to hold pills, needles or pencil lead might.

If it was a shot shell - with shot - it would be mighty small "buckshot", which is pea sized. Bird shot is smaller; but it has to have a way to get out of the shell (which stays behind, in spite of what they draw in the comics with a full cartridge in the air instead of just the bullet portion). The front would be crimped to allow it to escape.

Lipstick tube. Probably Confederate issue.

Now that I have seen the pic with the tape for reference, I too am having second thoughts. Looks to be about 2 1/4" long and about 1/2" dia. I have only found a few lipstick tubes but they were all larger than that. When dduffy said it's solid brass I'm thinking it must be pretty heavy for it's size. I have no idea what it is if not a lipstick tube but will be watching this thread.

dduffy...don't cut it open yet. Give it some time. Someone on here has probably seen something like this before.

RPG- it weighs 0.9 oz. sounds hollow except for what ever is moving around inside and that sounds very hard and kind of heavy. Breezie made me think maybe pills but i would think they would have dissolved it was 10 inches deep when i found it. Charlie P said maybe lead or needles could be. Pretty sure if it was lipstick tube I would be able to see where it would come apart and its very tight NO gap. Plus lipstick wold stick to the sides would it?

Still unsure on this one. I will try and find some of my lipstick tubes and measure them.

By the way, sorry your thread on todays finds got hijacked. Those are some very good finds. I'm looking forward to having a hunt like that soon. :)
