Maybe the cheapest method but not the most realistic. The San Jose is one of the richest shipwrecks lost anywhere in the world. The government of Columbia knows this. Lots of companies are standing in line waiting to get to it. But it will have to be done right, which means an archaeologist, and proper mapping, photography and excavation methods are going to be required.

(am I the only "treasure hunter" on Tnet that believes in doing good archaeology and perserving as much as the artifacts and history as possible?) Clam shell buckets? Are people still dynamiting reefs to extract coins???

No Tom you're not, we are out here!

A shipwreck will most likely consist of layers of covered archaeological material and the shinny stuff we call Treasure! The site may have to be cleared to reveal some of the artifacts.

A clam shell bucket is archaic even after the site has been examined by archaeologist! You risk damaging not only the Treasure but other fragile artifacts as well. The cost of damaging these items could well offset the cost of a scientific approach to excavating.

Tom never said he was the only Archaeologist on the net, he just asked if he was the only "Treasure Hunter" on TNet that believes in good archaeology!

Cornelius, I know you, like most of us, don't believe in the Archaeologist, but I know you do believe in good Archaeology and preserving history!

I am not surprised to my idea of some type of a clam shell bucket would meet with the NEG. response. I expected as much.
But I also said that you could design a Special Type of bucket to decrease any breakage.
If you work in an egg processing plant you WILL break a few eggs.
You CAN'T save it all NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY.
I suggest that you First use a Underwater camera along with a Side Scan Sonar with lights of course. Pin point where the most artifacts are laying then use the Special bucket and pic.
A ROV is not needed at least at not at this point and may never be needed.
But first things first. You must get permission from the Colombian Government.
I have estimated that the beginning cost of this project to be around $10 million. Now who is going to cover this cost-It sure woun't be any private investors because they are NOT interested in anything THAT IS NOT going to show a MAJOR PROFIT.
So what do you have left?
1. A group of people looking for some Historcial aritfacts.
2. A group of people that have a few bags of gold and silver bars and coins ;D That was easy to answer. At least for me it was.
Now all you guys that want to look for HistoricaL ARTIFACTS :-\ make damn sure that some BIG company does not take your project away from you. $2 Billion dollars has been know to start some very large Wars.

I want to add this as a parting thought.
What do you think the Pirates are going to be doing when they see you sitting there checking out some artifacts. I can hear the slide closing on AK-47's.

evening everyone,
I started reading this thread because someone wanted charts. I have the NOAA chart books (chart size is 24x36) the cover Norfok VA to the FL keys. Im sure I can get copies made at kinkos or somewhere like that. There from the late 90's but still very helpful.
As far a dousen,(however you spelled it) never heard of it, but I have witched for water, both w/ a forked stick and to coat hangers, and that worked. GO PEGLEG GO!!!
As far as the recovery of the treasure laying on the bottom at 750 feet... didnt salvor say it BLEW UP and is scattered all over, what are the archoligist going to find different than what a bucket/scoop system like peg leg sugested going to hurt that a big explosion would'nt........just a thought.

Dinkydick, I also have the charts of the st. johns from mayport to the end. theres 7 pages that covers the river, if you want copies let me know, i'm in jax also, believe we've talked before, just let me know.

good evening all

Capt_T.
I would love to have a copy but only of the Florida East Cost. Tell me what the cost is and I will pay for it.
Would you happen to have anything on the Gulf Coast?

I was thinking the same thing this morning.
If this ship blew up and scattered everything then the only ARTIFACTS would be the Gold and Silver and maybe a bunch of broken dishes and broken pottery and a few cannons. What ever was BREAKABLE is BROKEN.
Thanks again.

My computer crashed this morning.

Peg Leg,
copying charts is not as easy as i thought, the charts i have are 24x36 and in a book form so you cant copy using a blue print machine. the bigest xerox i have found so far only copy's 11x17, so i would have to do multiple copies and then tape together. If there is a certain area i wouldn't mind but to do the whole east coast would be a big mess. if anybody has a suggestion I'm open for ideas.
Tim

Can you say: West Marine???

I have the charts, but some others want copies of certian areas, was just wondering if someone knew of someplace to get larger copies made
tim

Most drafting supply shops can duplicate oversize stuff.

Morning Capt.
I have a friend in the printing business and he said that if you could take a photo of the charts and maybe put them on a Disc that he can make them anysize I need.
In fact you can copy the charts from a regular photo and work from there but some details might be lost.
Does this help any?
Peg Leg

My computer it fixed. I am back in business.

I really appreciate that. But taking that print to the printer, will cost as much or almost as a new map, but the result will never be as good. I think Peg Leg should have taken his grand kids to the marina, buy them an ice cream look at the beatifull boats and buy the map at the marina store. Not the cheapest place i guess but if the dowsing doesnt work you would have had a nice time with the kids. :)

Shoestring operations most often produce nothing but - shoestrings ;)
