Hey Gang, I found this buckle B.S. (before snow :laughing7:) in an area that has produced finds from Rev.War/Civil War up to V Nickels. It is 1" long, brass and is marked C . F . J . with the dots spaced apart. I found one almost identical to it in Howard Crouch's book, and he states: A typical suspender buckle of the Civil War era. Actually 1" long, this specimen is gilted brass and marked "Paris" and "1854."[ I haven't been able to find out any information on the CFJ company. All help and ideas would be appreciated. Breezie

As Crusader says....A wide date range for these type of Buckle, but I believe the one on the top right is identical to yours, and does indeed date to late 19th, early 20th c

This has beena great thread to follow and learn from .. Thanks!

The word use of "solide" on metal was often from companies doing military manufacturing for arms/weapons/etc. back in the day.
Solide is Solid in French.

Thanks CRU for the post, but somebuddy has to break that news to Howard Crouch . . :laughing7: Breezie

The buddy I metal detect with is a friend of Howard's. I'll share our disappointment. Unbelievable ID! :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

I guess Paris Mfg. Co is a possibility but you havent shown any link, pic or supporting evidence that they manufactured this type of pants buckle or any buckle with the word CFJ, PARIS or 1864. I asked for your links because I could help you search it.

The initials CFJ still remain a mystery. And Breezies buckle doesnt say PARIS.

Great pics Kuger.

what does it say I can't read it
Breezies buckle says C F J.

BCH, I'm thinking ChipV might be on to something when he said:
I'm guessing that CFJ may be Companie Francais Jacquard. :icon_thumleft: Breeziie

it's CFJ, a backpack, a haversack and it's the smaller haversack adjustment buckle ... parachutes, backpacks, whatever...
Its best to post a pic to support your idea.

Breez- when you say the dots are spaced apart, do you mean 1 dot? Look closely at the buckle and let me know how many dots you see

They are hard to see in the above pic, but there are 3 dots, one spaced behind each letter. Thanks again, Breezie

Lotsarocks, here is a close up showing the 3 dots. Breezie

How many people are digging there, keep it a secret area if it is one now. Old change and a possible aircraft cargo buckle, interesting. Change + pant suspenders makes sense too but depends what else can be found in that area. Maybe even google the area and look for past news articles on old plane crashes that can be associated near that area + look up to see if it was a drop zone training area. I don't do coins, what years were the V nickles made and what year do you have?
This is the last time I am posting here and Im through. This buckle is identical to an 1854 patent buckle and patents are only marked for 10-15 years so I dont understand why you keep referring to cargo planes? ??? TN seems more concerned about a new members feelings than it does credibility. This is nonsense and I will not play along.
Well said Big C  lottarocks I have posted a link for you, there are 38 pages of buckles, many exactly like Breezie's...all date them to the same time era, and for the same function :) http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=18947&cat=177
