I went to a Forest Preserve Creek trying to see what it's like to look for arrowheads in IL. I found nothing that resembles what I thought I might find, but I did find this curiously symmetrical piece. Anything important or just a geological anomaly? Thanks!
A friend on Instagram mentioned that this looks like a core stone, something they used to break blades off in the Neolithic period. Any thoughts on that?
Welcome. First photo, you can see the arc of a circle, where the piece tapers. I think that's a piece from the bottom of what was a pottery pot. Unless it's not. If you could identify the stone. I see pores.
Cores are usually more cone shaped, I don’t think it’s the right material, not seeing conchoidal fractures, and to cover all bases Neolithic is a European classification if you search with that term you will get European artifacts that were different from North American ones could be misleading
That definitely appears to be a likely candidate. I'm brand new to all this, so I won'e even venture to guess what it's made of. In the pics it does appear to be porous, but I wouldn't call it such when I've got it here in my hand.
Also, "A real man thinks about detecting every six seconds." Ha. Love it.
