Spent 3 hours (6 man hours) on the R*pe Field which we left a couple of weeks ago. If the weather tomorrow isn't heavy storms like predicted then we should finish this field for good. As we have done it for several years & its not that good. (1 to cross off the list)

1 scappy roman
Nice lead cloth seal
bits...

Best find was most of a sword belt fittment. I did a quick scetch to show how it worked. I have not seen this type before & can find it in my books but I will place it in the 14-15th century. :)

Supreme find Crusader :notworthy:

Mike

Crusader - hope you don't mind, but I had to play. Cropped the "faces" that I found and pulled one that I don't think you noticed on another object. I did no "alterations" to your pics aside from cropping and adjusting the contrast (helps bring out some of the details). The first pic - eyes are "squinting" closed, nostrils are the two small holes in the middle, mouth is two holes at bottom. Second pic - more "animal-like" - for some reason an ape sorta' comes to mind - I flipped the the pic for this one (180) - eyes at top, nose at center, mouth at bottom. Third pic - whatever that piece is in top right corner of second photo of second post - noticed the "skull" as soon as I looked at it. Pretty darn cool. Hope you enjoy...

Excellent work, I never spotted the 180 animal head. This could signify a transformation of man to beast (or the reverse). We may never understand the true power of these pieces but they are my favourite period of history. I have studied other Viking Brooches which had different faces depending which way up it is, so its not unknown for this to happen.

THANK-YOU.

However, your imagination ran away with you on the lead bag seal. It does look like a skull but its just mud left in the gaps of some of the letters.

PS.. Check my post on the Whats it forum.

Amazing finds - well done. Love the hidden faces on the strap-end - can see the animal but I don't think its particularly ape-like but then again you never know what kind of animal they had swinging through the jungles in Greenland ::)

I hear you. UK Tnet'ers will appreciate this one more (possibly). This will properly be the only one I will ever get & I have yet to find this design on any others. Its in cracking condition with only some areas of patina knocked off (its better in the hand than I can photo). I'll save the banner for something better  (I wish)

I only dream of hunting the fields of ancient rome. WTG on that one Crusader

Similar but not (if you get me). My otter like animals look like they have fire from the nostrols (dragon or fenris wolf?) however, its also closer to the Winchester style animals, more realistic therefore more fitting with the Saxon's :icon_scratch: Need an expert.

pretty cool site. HH

WOW!

Those are INCREDIBLE finds!!

Looks like you'll have to *make do* with VIKING instead of Saxon :D

Keep it up, friend--and Cheers to you!
