WOW!
that cleaned up really well from your picks in the ID forum.
it's amazing all the gilt that can hide under the dirt.
i've never seen one of those come up before,
and i'd be curious to know what the known population of those is.
hope there's a whole coat's worth of 'em wherever you found it...

nice button...congrats and Welcome to the forum !
H

Nice button all around, this is a great place to show off your finds and hunting experiences. HH

Welcome :hello:
Thanks for sharing this fine example of a rare button !

Good choice. I was a little concerned you were going to leave as dug.

Thanks Fieldslayer for the HUZZA and banner nod! I am still trying to find more info about this button (age,rarity,variations,etc...). Any additional info would be much appreciated.
Thanks again to everyone and HH

ya, this is one of those buttons that makes me wish i had more (any) button books.
can't seem to find anything online about it.
i might get spanked for this, but it seems like this one is rarer than some of the GW
inaugural buttons...

It most likely is rarer than most of the GW's that we see posted here, but the demand for collecting is not the same thus, the GW's get all the attention.
Since your button sure looks like the OD 5B variety in Albert's book, it seems that is the 2nd most valuable of all the Diplomatic buttons listed, (Relative Value listing in Alberts of 75) so yes, that is a banner find for sure. It probably is worth a few bills.

In Albert's book it surmises some were dual use buttons, not only diplomatic corp, since they wore military type uniforms in the late 1700s into early 1800s, but some were also used by the military. Not sure of the date but I would venture to say pre War of 1812 and more like late 1790s to 1810 for a safe bet.

Sorry, just getting back here argentum. Don's information provided is accurate , as usual , and I would concur completely. My experience , to be sure, would make this a much rarer find than at least your more common GW varieties and in that condition ; definately a few bills ! Continued Good Hunting !

We early American button lovers (especially between the 2 big wars) , are an enthusiastic , but a not as large in numbers bunch. Apparently, most don't visit here too often. Jersey Don described it right about the rareity of this historic button. If something lists for 75 in Alberts military button reference, it's a SCREAMER !!! (worth several times the money today). A man will hunt campsites and such, a long time before he's likely to find this one. Anyways , I just could'nt let it sink into oblivion so I'll move it to the top again, in case some folks missed it. ......IT DESERVES IT !!!!!!!!!!

Hey Argentum : This is the third time I have looked at that beautiful button on here and yet had not commented on what a nice find it was ! :icon_sunny: MaineRelic

I've seen it many times, other earlier great buttons not getting much attention because 99+% of the people on this site don't know what it is without being told, and even once told don't think much of it rather than another old button. Some of the guys I know on here have posted Loyalist 2nd American buttons several times and they get about the same comments as a nice condition common Navy button, but probably not as many as a great condition common Navy. I've seen other posts that were pretty much jaw dropping but because the person posting didn't call it their best day ever, or use 500 smiley faces, the thread just got the usual replies as any other good post and dropped to the next page.

I wish all these early items were for sale because it would definitely be a buyer's market!

Nice new avatar bump.
Ridiculous button.
My vote was in a coupla few days ago.

Don

I've often thought that. Plenty of GW's turn up & make the banner, time & time again, rare :icon_scratch:

Knowledge should be power at every ones finger tips, so why the lack of it when we see the same buttons making the banner. Simple, as you point out - demand (out strips supply). But this doesn't always = rarity
