Question for the detector gods....

Im in a place where i'm picking up lots of Wheat pennies. Earliest is 1935 and the latest is 1950.
I haven't found any silver before 1964, just the pennies.

Do you guys keep all your Wheaties? Is there a year cut off thats best to spend?

What's in your coin jar?

I keep all of the Wheaties I find -- both from circulation and MDing. I've got hundreds of them all in plastic tubes, except the better grades/dates I keep in single hard plastic flips.

Geez, never spend Wheaties, they are worth lots more than a penny by spending them. I save them all and Indian Heads too. Silver, heck yeah. :D

save the wheaties and silver coins --spend the clad and zincs

I used to save wheaties. I separated out the good dates ('09 to '15s wheats, which we get a lot of in CA), and all the rest (reams of crappy '40s & 50s stuff) I saved in a gallon can. Eventually when it reached the brim, I sold them to a guy for .03 each (based on rough estimates of the weight).

Awhile later, he contacted me rather upset, that: 1) the pennies were cruddy and corroded, and 2) there were nothing in there numismatically worth anything (go figure, I'd cherry picked them already as I was finding them). He figured I'd ripped him off or something. So now, I just put all my wheat pennies back in circulation, since it's not worth shopping around for a buyer at .02 or .03 and hearing flack later :o

I've saved mine for some unknown reason. Just kinda' hard to part with since I worked so hard to retrieve most of them. But alas, you are right. They aren't really worth the effort in terms of $$$. Monty

i keep them, they are getting harder an harder to come by

Back in the 80's early 90's I spent all my Wheaties,
as they were as easy to find as Memorials
around here.
Since they have been Thinned out some,
I now Catalog & Keep them.

I saw someone do this and plan to do the same.
I have several .25 cent gumball machines, and I am going to put my wheat pennies
in small plastic bubbles and place them inside the machine, along with several
Roosevelt's, and Merc's, and maybe a Barber dime, and a few of the worst silver quarters.
and let people pay me .25 cents each, for the "not worth a dime" wheat cents, for a chance at a nice silver coin....

(or some other obscene prize...)

He set it up at the flea market and I saw a guy sit there with a roll of quarters, trying for
a silver dime, or other silver piece...

It was very funny...

There used to be a Detector Dealer around here
who would do that at the club hunts.
And I always saw the same guy there
Playing it all day :D

I keep and cherish every one of them! Yesterday when cleaning my clad I came across two wheats I had missed a 42 and a 1912. The 12 is in BADDDDD shape sadly... :( :(

I save my wheats and keep them separated from the clad. I also keep the Piranha/chewed up coins separate. I'm definately keeping the wheats.

they arent that easy to come by in miami. i save any wheaty i get.

Dude... keep your wheaties or if you don't want to keep them sow them somewhere for future detectorists. You can't be finding that many... throw them out in a field or in your yard. Someone, someday will thank you! But, don't spend them...

Then again, someone will take them out of circulation if you spend them, and be glad to get them in change.

I also seem to get a wheatie now almost every trip...but not the silver coins...only 8 this year. So...I know how you feel...but you should be saving the wheaties...also there probably are some silver coins where you are finding the wheaties...

I sort them by year and Mint mark, then roll them. all the culls "road warriors" that are in really tough shape I save for the grand kids to spend.

I wait til we are at the carnival and then watch the Carnies get all excited about the fool spending all the old money, We sure have a good time. the kids and the rides and me with the Carnies ...
