That seal would be something to behold and extremely desirable & valuable to many people!
Donations from civilians were melted in Macon foundry(s) during the war.
What better hands in which to be able to preserve and or duplicate such an item?
But then a particular group or groups might have been in the running for recieving possession of it in an attempt to secure it.

Whoa! Thanks for posting this Jeff! I've never heard of this story. I'm actually working with a preservation and restoration company in Macon, GA and reached out to my contact. We recently did some metal detecting for cemetery relics for an upcoming museum so if anyone would know some more details on this, I'm hoping he would or he could tap into his history network people in Macon.
Sounds like it would also make a beautiful plot for another mystery thriller in my treasure hunting book series. I'm feeling the itch again.
