Greetings All,
had to bump this back up top,
after reading about CMD Dawgs old Banner US 20 Cent find, I pulled the 20C Chinese I dug on this hunt, as stated in OP, I first saw 'Twenty Cents' through the mud & figured I had an awesome find.
after rinsing and seeing chinese, it went into the 'junk' pocket.
After all, chinese coins are junk, right ? (even 1600s versions)
and any that aren't brass are base metal. (I disregarded the sweet sound it made)
some research this morning reveals that it is a Chinese Silver,
and my T-net search reveals none previously posted,
minted 1912-1918, (previous issues had a nice dragon design)
read below about the construction of the massive mint in Canton (Kwang-Tung)
that produced silver coins 5C to $1 in 1887:

very happy that I rescued this silver from the junk box !
Silver Coins seem to elude my coil, this is my Best yet ;D
I'll take this time to thank Bramble again for the ID on Haitian Copper. Great Digs to You All :icon_sunny:
Hi All,
Found 2 buttons like I've never seen, openwork would be my best description,
and what I think is a dandy, it's large with some kind of backing like a 2 piece :icon_scratch:
Two copper coins, one 28mm with no detail, an LC of some sort I imagine.
The other is 30 mm, with a scallop or spoked wheel, would think a britannia shield, but it's in the wrong position, lettering outside a ring and a date of 1780's or 90's.
soaking in oil now, hope for some more details ???
lots of bottles of many types, haven't been able to photograph all of them, but in nice shape, coming from clay rather than scratchy sand.
dug a coin and through the mud saw 'Twenty Cents' Yee Hah :hello2:
Was not to be :'( rinsed it off to find a chinese.
A brass chain with clip & tongs with sliding rosette, what is it ?
New York Navy yard Pin,
1918 'Travel and Transortation building Chicago Worlds Fair' tray, some silver left,
at 3 X 4.5 inches didn't I think I had an NH buckle :o .
lead alloy beer stein cover, nice design, wonder how it got folded up ?
many more finds, and more to come.
thanks for looking & HH to you all

Re: Civilian Buttons, Smooth Coppers, & Bottles

Herbie,
I want a free admission to your relic museum when you open it. ;D What a haul. :o I know I'm odd, but I really like that gold flower button. Another super post.

Hi MM,
Love that little one too, I know that I pulled 2 of those from the mud,
when I got home, only one in my pocket :icon_scratch:
Two possible scenarios: I dropped the button while trying to get my mud caked fingers into my pocket, then 'refound' it, and this is the only one, or I dropped one and it's still out there in the mud.
not the first time I've gotten home and said 'where's that other thing' :tongue3:
Anyone seen 'openwork' button faces like those above ? they're my firsts :dontknow:
Thanks & HH to all

Herbie,
I hate it that you lost one of those buttons in the mud. With the finds I make, I usually WANT to lose them in the mud. :tongue3: :laughing9:
Never saw openwork buttons like that. Very cool.

Re: Civilian Buttons, Smooth Coppers, & Bottles

Great finds...I thought the tray and Navy Yard pin were the most interesting.Ive only found one navy cuff button so far here in NH.Of all places to find it, right in front of a little league field in Manchester.

Nice!! :icon_thumleft:

Love the ink well!

Herbie,
The one and only silver dollar I found while metal detecting is a 1911 Chinese Silver Dollar. It is the version with the dragon on the back so yes I have heard of Chinese silver coins.

Thanks...that one did make my display case.

Wow nice hunt, don't them spoons hit nice.

The thong-chain thing looks a little similar to the one I found. Mine is a Victorian skirt lifter. The ladies would grasp their long skirts with the thong and lift the skirt to keep it from touching the mud. Yours probably hung by the clip on the chain. Try Googling skirt lifter.
