I know several things for sure. Two bars were found near the ambush site. I call it that. It may be the soldiers may have been fighting each other. Back in those mountains the only way to bring a wagon in is to follow the ridge lines. I did so and at Schaffer draft east ridge line what was left of a wagon Jack burned. He was covering his tracks. The account states the party left the area in a SW direction. It also states a survey crew marking the county border discovered 6 skeletons in that spot in the 1870s. I searched between the wagon the skeleton site and found nothing. When was arrived at that spot I found the gun parts. The theory is during the fight mules ran off in different directions. The homemade bags breaking open with gold bars falling onto the ground. This explains the two bars found on the ground by Jack. I have no other facts on the incident. I spent my time searching with detectors the area around the ambush site looking for more. Nothing was found. The area is covered with small cave and ledges where bars could be hidden. I did this a number of years. I was grid searching the area with various detectors set up for the task. There are timber rattlers in the area so be carefull. I had a Whites gold detector with a small coil and a 10 ft stem for reaching under the ledges. The stem extensions were provided by Whites who later became a sponsor for my videos after the Legend TV show on History. The coil had a extra long wire. I also used the Ismael Jones mine lab 2000 detector I bought from him it was his personal unit with all his mods. He built it for searching for deep gold in Oz. The 2000 puts out a extra strong signal the other Minelab detectors do not. I have a 25" handmade nugget finder coil for it. I still use that detector here in Arizona at treasure sites. Recently it picked up a very deep 4' wide target. I suspect may be a gold deposit. It is in a area near where very rich gold was found in the past. A geologist pointed out that area. Well that's it and good luck it is a beautiful area in Bell draft go in the spring or fall after the first freeze only. Kill the weeds and eye eating knats. About 500' west following the pipeline you will find the remnants of a ghost town logging camp. There is stuff spread out in that spot. Everything including a kitchen sink. If you drive up Bell Draft north you will come to a cabin where the road makes a sharp turn to the west and comes back down to the south. Right before that cabin where the logging railroad came down from the logging camp is now a marked trail. The trail goes up the hill bending to the Nwest. Follow the track bend. Where it ends is the ambush site. A easy way in. Use my map and a GPS. I am posting this for my fellow Thunters on Tnet. Interested in searching for gold bars from the incident. Giving back for all the stuff I learned on this great site. Don't let the negative posters discourage you. If nothing else you will have a great time! I did.

Your account includes surveyors marking the county line finding 6 human skeletons. Surveyors keep meticulous notes. This certainly would be documented in their field books. Did you ever contact the county surveyors office or the BLM (GLO Records) to determine who had a contract to survey that border? Survey field books are retained as official documents. Unless there was a courthouse fire (which is possible in the Civil War era, they should exist. They may also pin down the exact location of the discovery. By the way, I agree there is a glimmer of hope treasure may still be buried simply due to the fact that the dig site was determined solely by a mystic placing their finger on a map (correct me if I’m mistaken). Anybody could say that could be a questionable method of research.

I'll never forget my first trip to Bell Draft. While searching in Bell Draft I looked up at a high hill to the east. A sense of dread hit me hard and my butt puckered. A warning don't go there! Later I discovered the ambush site on the other side of that hill. I'm approaching 77 and made it this far listening to that 6th sense. Survived Vietnam as a gunner on a Swiftboat and 33 years as Police Officer. Not to mention every day things.

My question (if that’s what you took offense to) was based on my personal experience having worked with these types of records for my entire life. Few people understand what type of available information is contained in survey field books and even fewer are capable of understanding the hand writing and content. It’s something that could get overlooked. I’ve not read anything other than the 1960’s treasure magazine story and most everything that was posted here by the guy involved in the most recent search as well as interviews that were reported. I’m unaware of any other sources of earlier historical information.

But you never did indicate if you looked for those records. Maybe something for others to think about. Why would they record the discovery of 6 skeletons in a survey field book? Why would they paint bars of gold black in hopes it would disguise them? Be much easier to wrap them in canvas or something.

we have been hit here in Arizona with a string of historic rain storms. Needless to say even though it's cooling off my search areas are not safe because of flooding it rained so heavy my pool overflowed. So I find the time to post more than usual. In Pennsylvania I would haunt auctions and house sales. I collect odd things. At one estate sale was a huge pile of paintings. The man was a well known artist. Not much of interest upstairs for me. Down in the basement I found a complete set of the first edition topo maps of Pennsylvania. Mint never folded. I grabbed the pile and hauled them upstairs. Told the dealers the were outdated and not of much use. $5. I kept the ones for areas I was interested in and offered the balance to members on this site for areas they had a interest in. No charge. That's how I met John Stevenson and so the rest is history. That's how we became close friends. Funny you never know how a kindness will come back to you. Fate? The map I posted of the site is one of those maps I saved and shows the old railroad pathway to the Bell Draft logging camp. Saved me a lot of trouble getting into that area.

Many hours of research at the Pittsburgh Carnegie library. They have a collection of old county histories. Many so old the are falling apart. I found the original story there. Pretty much word for word as the treasure magazine story. The author of the magazine story would collect these old stories and reprint them as his own word for word. I research until I find something to follow up on. I'm not upset with you. After the Legend of the Superstition Mountains aired on History and over 10000000 people watched it around the world I get my fair share of of it. The reason I was part of the cast was the large amount of gold Woody and I found there. I became involved due to boredom at the time. Sumner months are slow here. People travel here from around the world to ask questions about it . They show up at my house. Gold fever! I point the way and they get to go home with some gold in their pockets. My partner Woody makes a living off teaching them how to pan and find gold. Out that 100000000 maybe 50000 hate me because I suck on a cigar or I'm a ex cop or I shoot rattlesnakes. It's unavoidable and I overlook it. The information I posted will help some serious hunters and I'm happy with that. Trust me I have enough fame. I will say one thing that is not true and has been said . Not everywhere I stand will you find gold under my feet. I may need to walk a bit. It's only gold and I give most away to friends. I appear often on the tube Chasing Legends with Wayne showing us follow up on some treasure legends. Proving true or false or faked. On this incident I found that something happened in Bell Draft and there is enough to follow up on. I can only pass on what I found or was told by trusted friends. in the 80's I handled FBI crime scenes processing them for evidence. Prints and such. The FBI would request I process their bank robbery scenes and I became friends with their OIC. If he was still around I could find out what happened up there but alas he is long gone and past is past. Would be interesting though. It was interesting touring their business. I walked up to young guy putting detectors together. I thought he was going to have a heart attack. Here he was a huge fan of the Legend show. For the most part that has died down except in Apache Junction next to the Superstitions. With exception of countries airing it on their History Channel. Had a guy from Germany sen me a picture of me on his TV screen.i asked if I was speaking German. He said fluently. I think I can speak Chinese also.

However after having confidence with Tesoro detectors for many years (my dad was a dealer along with Minelab) , I was disappointed that our particular model failed to detect $5 gold coins at less than 4” deep.

Talk about bad timing. Luckily someone (nice) was willing to trade off with a detector that would. I’m not saying that was me.

Not directed at you. I actually know certain dowsing methods work based on experience. Other methods just don’t seem to provide physical evidence of success. No insult intended. I was researching dowsing along with ESP back in the later 1980’s as a youth. Oil companies were paying big money for remote dowsing. I just don’t have faith because I’ve not witnessed physical verification, NOT TO SIDETRACK the discussion.

I never said anything about a map other than FK apparently told a reporter that a dowser put their finger on a map and told him “The treasure is here”. That’s where he decided to search as far as I have read.

There are those that have gifts. A Partners wife was a gold witch. She would point out a window in my vehicle at a rock. There is a gold nugget under that rock. Get out of the vehicle to look. A nugget. This happened a thousand times. There was something evil about the whole thing. Got away from them. If she was holding a fork and got angry the fork would distort into a twisted mess. I did not care how much gold she could find it was not worth it. She did map dowsing too. She ended up trying to put a death curse on me. Had a shaman remove it. I'm still here and she is not. Never thought to have her look at the Dents Run map. She just knew things. Creepy.
