Was hunting a lane that goes back to the river and got a loud high tone I thought aluminum can but raised my coil and sound went away so I dug it. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the big silver in the plug. I cleaned off with water bottle and thought I had an old one but turned out to be a 2001 silver dollar. I don't care I'll take it. I also found another coin about 50 feet away and I was on cloud nine and I cleaned it off and saw it was a readers digest token. It doesn't matter I still got my first silver dollar! Going back to this path again soon. Thanks for looking. image-2117521865.webp image-92063277.webp image-1498305912.webp image-4285198589.webp image-2045118603.webp

Place some baking soda in a dish and run some water over the coin then lay it in the dry baking soda..rub that in with ya thumbs, rinse and repeat till clean.

Oh, :icon_scratch:

Wow, its a silver eagle !! I really like these coins its almost better than say a Peace Dollar or Morgan !! :occasion14: Its one full ounce of .999 fine silver.... A normal dollar is only 26.7 grams and only .900 silver !! :dontknow: So it maybe not old but its a solid ounce of silver !! :headbang: Great find, I love it..!! :notworthy: PS: Not only does this coin have a bullion value but it also is a Government issued coin, so normally would have numismatic value too. Since its dug though don't worry about all that !! Can't wait to see it all cleaned up, make sure you post it !!

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

thanks I will post when cleaned up can't believe how tarnished it is. When I dig silver coins around here they usually come out nice and clean. Must be that it's pure silver don't know.

Great find on the silver dollar! Worth $20 - $30 on Ebay. HH.

I too am curious as to how these massive pieces get away from people and not only are dropped but remain hidden long enough to really
go under - I guess you could lose it in the snow .

My guess is maybe a kid gets ahold of one or is given one from someone and puts it in their pocket and it's gone. Also could be someone keeps it in their pocket for a good luck charm. Just my guess though. The way this one looks it could very well of been in the ground since the early 2000's. Don't know for sure. That token I found is also very corroded and I'm not sure when readers digest did these. That's the second token I've found from readers digest the first one was size of a quarter and this one is the size of a half dollar. Strange finds today but I'll take them. I did find a lot of trash today too but figured I didn't need a pic of that because we all know what that looks like lol.

As with Roman coins found in the US and other oddities, my hypothesis for the most likely source is that kids bring part of a coin collection or a gift to show off to friends and lose them.

Don't rub it with baking soda, unless you want fine scratches on the finish . Get a glass dish, line it with aluminum foil. Place the silver round on top of the coin. Heat water to boiling, enough to cover the coin in the dish. put a tsp of baking soda and some salt in the boiling water and pour it over the round. wait 15 minutes and turn it over. After another 10 minutes, take it out and rinse it off, you should be good to go. This is a form of electrolysis, works well on silver rings and flatware also.

Very nice find, EJ, more silver than a silver dollar!

thanks Wayne I'll try that tonite and see how it turns out. Still can't believe I found a silver eagle when I seen that big silver in the plug all I could think of was an old dollar. Don't get me wrong this is prob a once in a lifetime find for me I doubt I ever find another silver eagle. People collect them and use them for investment they were never used as currency. I'm just in awe its hitting me now that the silver rush is over lol.

Big congrats to you, Kodiak. That is a GREAT find. I have bought a few lately but never even dreamed of finding one. That's how scarce the chances of duplicating your dig is in my opinion.:coffee2:
I agree that it was probably lost by a youngster.

very nice. although you're kinda bummed that it's not old, in a lot of ways it's better and more valuable than an average date morgan or peace dollar because it is a higher silver content and slightly bigger as well. sweet find. congrats!

Thanks everyone now that I thought it through I'm really excited and realize I'll prob never find another while detecting. It's my new favorite find. :)

First round of cleaning going to need a bit more.
