Not at all. I think of most of the people on this site you actually still think for yourself and are not completed indoctrinated. I just ask that everyone be a bit more compassionate to those less fortunate. They are not always in that position because of laziness, etc, etc. I hope you would agree with that.

Just as the wealthy are not always there because they are better, harder working, smarter, etc.

I completely agree with that. That is why as others have mentioned having local town, church, community programs where people can get resources a little bit more anonymously are very important.

Nobody wants to see kids go hungry, and nobody holds a grudge about helping people that are truly in need for what ever reason. But the way the welfare system works encourages abuse. When someone can't/won't get a job because welfare pays more money, or when you see someone purchase water on their Oregon Trail food card, then go outside and dump it all out and go back in the store and get their 5 cent deposit money on the bottles and use that to buy cigarettes, then that abuse is what makes folks get down on the welfare system. And of course when their is an investigation and the powers that be discover the California food cards are being cashed in Nevada Casinos, and in Hawaii, well, there has to be a better way. You can't get people back to work if you pay them more than they can make doing nothing, and fraud is rampant. Are we supposed to ignore the fraud because there might be a hungry child? Come on, this is America, and there is no reason for people to go hungry in this country. Just in this town, we have the Mission, the Friendly Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, the food bank and various other food drives. To be poor in America means two cars, a cell phone or two, and flat screen TV's. Don't get me wrong, I'm a redneck conservative, but I'm a soft hearted sucker also, and I give plenty and have been taken advantage of, and I'll do it again. I just helped a Iraq war veteran that had been to the local VA hospital, and needed to spend the night and get something to eat and catch the bus out the next morning, so myself and a couple of other uncaring rednecks pooled our money, and gave him a motel room for the night and some cash for food. He did $750 damage to the room and we get to pay for that. But I'll not stop helping hungry people because of that. It's just the way welfare is set up, and the fraud in the system is what eats at me.

Lets not punish the needy because of the criminal. I would think that this would be a concept that pro 2nd amendment people would really understand and embrace.

I do not remember how many different people I lived with as a child. My mother was institutionalized when I was a child of 4, and my father was incarcerated. So I was a toss-away child. There was no welfare system in the 50's. My clothing came from the church, and much of my food did as well.

I was emancipated at 15, walked over 40 miles to a town in NC, lived on the street for weeks until I lied about my age and got a job in the cotton mills. Worked my way through high school on 2nd shift living in a boarding house. At that point, I had attended 18 different schools before finishing high school.

Joined the army the day after my 18th birthday for the free education. I knew that education would set me free. Ended that pursuit with 5 different degrees.

Even with nothing, you can make great progress in this world, and you can also believe in yourself. You just have to do it, go for it, seize opportunity.

I AM A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE WELFARE SYSTEM.

But not the welfare system we have today - it has been hijacked.

I lived in Detroit many times, and the current state of the city expresses the failure of the abuse of a corrupt system.

The system needs to stay - for the children's sake. But it needs to be a system which promotes success and accomplishment most of all.

I couldn't agree more!! I am glad you were able to turn that situation into a success story . Anyone who can pull out of that situation is proof that welfare doesn't need to be a generational thing.

Now maybe you can understand why Diesel and I are more "hardened" than many. And perhaps you can see the reason we are more "watchful". He and I have lived the pure base survival mode.

As a child everything was "danger" for me. I've never been a coward. I have certainly been a watcher and a strategist.

Deep seeker your story really spoke to me and I commend you.Too often poverty just puts people in such a state of hopelessness that they can't dig their way out. My husband grew up in a childrens' home from the age of about 10 because his mother simply could not care for him because of mental issues but that didnt stop him from being successful later in life. We fix up donated YMCA bags with goodies for all that have graduated from high school that live in the home where my husband grew up with some things they might want and need as far as toiletries,flash drives,and the like and even a few fun items as well.These kids needs hope that strangers,total strangers believe in them and all is not lost.

I am all for a hand up not hand out!
Hand outs make the giver feel good and the receiver feel less than.
I also am for drug testing all adults receiving welfare of any kind, just the way employers offer drug test when hiding. .

We have a private food bank in our area, many of the people you see in line are the same people who you see arrested for drug offenses. You just know these folks use the money that they save by getting free food to buy drugs. The system is so enabling! !

There are truly hungry people out there and maybe food stamps can serve their purpose at some point in people who are all of a sudden homeless but I think as a long going program it can lose its effectiveness and original intent.Food banks however as dizzy digger mentioned are wonderful programs as are local soup kitchens and are very much appreciated by the people who truly are in need.

We do the hunters for the hungry program here. We provided butchered venison by professional butchers packaged and delivered. I am wondering though if this topic is in the wrong area?

perhaps, and just perhaps, the reason they are in the line is because unless they are "model" citizens they can't get hired to any job. And while I'm on the subject, why do you guys pee in a cup in order to have employment? Doesn't that sound like someone is presuming you are a drug user? I can hardly believe that someone with 5 degrees would have to go through that. Could you possibly tell us what 5 degrees you have and what you do for a living? And even more importantly, WHY DO YOU TOLERATE THAT? Do you do drugs?
Do you think your elected representatives should also be tested for drugs every 5 months or whenever their constituency thinks they are doing idiotic things?

It's already been proven that the folks that receive welfare have no more tendency to use or abuse drugs than the general population. That number is 2%. Does it make you feel superior to those that may need welfare to live? I know, instead of giving out ebt cards or whateve, we can hire governmental employees to deliver a standard amount of food to each person that is on a program. They may get a lot of rice and beans, peanut butter and cheese but they won't be getting any soda or water. What do you think? I will propose this to the floriduh legislature on Tuesday and submit my contract to perform such service at a nominal million dollar fee. Are you ok with that?

You are certainly entitled to you opinions, and you can do whatever you desire to stop hunger and welfare abuse in this country, In other. simpler words since you believe us to be Neanderthals, "you do what you want with your money, and don't be telling me what to do with mine!"

I also don't know how you make your living, and don't care, but since I make mine in the logging and construction field, I'll pee in acup, and expect any others on the job to also to insure that safe workplace.
