dgjr told me to do this. He wants to know what it is. Its a museum mystery. Found near Red River in an old trade area where Indian artifacts, CW, Early settlers and who know what lived.. From a trash pit dig. The pit was about 4 foot or more around and we have dug to about 10 feet and still uncovering layers.

1. It is brass or an alloy of some type. Most likely brass.
2. 1/2 to 3/4 inches deep in concave part.
3. 5-3/8 inches in diameter. Inside hole is not quite 3/4 inches
4. How long will brass stay in the ground and decompose.
5. Only one other probable piece was found. 1-1/4 inches long with "v" hatch marks. slight curve.
6. Large section has line decoration around concave side.
7. I don't think it is the obvious.

Any other questions. I'm sending in two sections.

dgjr wants to know, and so do I..
Have at it.

DG

Not a bell or grease cup, not shaped right.. Carrage is an interesting idea. To give you a time line idea. A cut in half liberty cap 1820's fifty cent was found within 50 yards of the pit. The stone duck Indian ceremonial pipe I posted several months ago was found with in 100 yards of the pit. A 1815 U.S. militia button was found in the pit. Probably Battle of New Orleans era.. So its rich territory...

Offhand I'd say it was base of a coachlight or a wheel hub(like to cap the grease cup on the axel). Could be something to do with a horse drawn coach. As to the corrosion of the metal, would depend on what it was closely associated with. Brass doesn't usually go away without a reason. Looks to be rather thin in the cross section. Very Interesting DG.

Possible doc. This is an ebay item: http://cgi.ebay.com/Solid-Brass-Coa...8QQihZ001QQcategoryZ94939QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The picture suggests to me that it's brass plated ferrous metal. I see what appears to be lots of brown rust areas and the corroded hole in it looks like steel at the edges. Will a magnet stick to it? If so, it probably isn't as old as you're thinking. As far as what it is....no idea. Looks like it could well be part of a lamp of some sort. The small piece under it appears to be solid brass though.

I believe you when you say it's old. I just meant that style of lamp, not one you would buy at home depot.

Okay it looks like the inside may have held something sort of darkened and worn...Part of a bed warmer?
