Found Something Really Cool!

Found this eroding out of an arroyo washout due to all the rain we are getting. At first I just thought that it was a regular vertebra but after cleaning it off I could not believe what I was seeing. I told my wife that I think that we have something pretty special, don't you think. After doing a little research I am pretty sure it's a ''Stott's Point. From what I gather Stott's point are associated with the buffalo hunters from the Alberta Canada area down into Montana and the Dakota's.

Beautiful archeological find and nice artifact looks completely intact not splits or fractures, simply amazing find indeed. Congrats on your banner find.

Thank You for the enhancement in the photo's.

OD, I corrected the color temp, and sharpened them as best I could.
I'm guessing you took these pics under fluorescent bulbs? If so, your
Kodak Easyshare camera has some settings that will compensate for the
yellowing effect of the fluorescent lamps.

For sharper images, you might try taking the image from a bit further
away. That way the camera's auto-focus will properly adjust, and the
item in the foreground won't end up blurred.

That Easyshare has a number features that you also find on higher end
cameras, so take advantage of them..

There's also an "Extended Manual" for your particular camera.

Wow great find..glad its a banner...Stott points came around the period of changeover from Atlatl to Bow..thus the more powerful force to drive it into bone..severed the spine so it dropped whatever it was like a rock..interesting to find out what kind of critter it was..Actually seen a half dozen or so of arrowhead recoveries in bone it my lifetime but never personally found one myself...Ole Jim Bridger packed one around in his back for quite few years until someone did primitive surgery on him back in the day!! Kennewick man packed a cascade in his hip till he died 8,000 years ago... Otzi from Switzerland had one in him also..a lot of artifact points have been flung in the last 10,000 years on the North American continent!!

Just adding my voice to the many already here. What a million to one shot. I too, was thinking about the force to propel that thing so deep past muscle and sinew and into the bone. I'm not surprised that the point didn't break though. LIVING bone is even a little pliable. Almost like a super-hard leather. But add the FORCE of the propelling, to the skill of aiming it correctly, and my gosh - our ancestors were pretty darn skilled . . .

Is that an ANIMAL vertebrae? Looks small for a buffalo.

Looks about right. Worked in a meat packing house for a long time. My job was to remove those from necks and chucks as quickly and cleanly as possible.

Incredible find, grats. Odd but I don't have a stone and bone setting on my 1080 fisher.

Don't know if that was an instant kill shot, but it had to be a paralyzing or knock down for sure, right into the spinal nerves.

Wow!! Excellent find! Congrats on the banner...... and I thought I had the only one! I found this one in a California Desert 30 +/- years ago. I believe it's deer, elk, or Bighorn sheep vertebrae. Again, Congrats!

Wow, too cool, OD. There may be a lot out there, but I've only personally seen 3 in my life, a Washita point in a deer hipbone, a point in a human neck vertebrae, and that Calf Creek point in the skull that probably everybody is familiar with. Really cool find.
