Looks like a chain from an animal trap.. My best guess

The chain is connected to a solid ring. The chain is old. The two small j looking hooks were found in the same hole.

Lots of land, just barely got into any of it..Will be back.

Looks like farm iron but you're definitely in the right area. The fact that you're digging iron means your efforts are going to pay off real soon! Keep digging every signal!

I will say that i was worried that my F4 would not be sensitive enough. I was digging tiny (and i mean tiny)nails at 6+ inches. Depth seems find, getting used to the ground balance and the machine noises.

Also, the Garrett pro pointer is worth its weight in gold.

I was thinking it could be a Cavalry trace chain that the confederates used. I do not know what kind of camp you were hunting union or confederate. The union had things marked all the time like in the photo while the confederates would have to use stuff that was not marked or machine made. This could be a confederate cavalry chain. Will have too look later @ the books and research it.

Skins what does the end of the chain look like? i been trying to zoom in and out a few times and can not see the other end. Also what is the length of the whole chain it looks pretty long.

I dig lot of small game Victor traps mainly from the 1940s-70s. The game chains I dig up a lot depending on location don't have as much rust build up as yours and most of the chains are a lot smaller. Im assuming you are over toward like Orange/Culpeper area in which if that is the case things rust up over there over night basically in that poor soil. Good luck in the next hunt!

...........that chain type is stock on Victor Traps from fox to coyote....no idea how fast anything rusts

Yep! lot of coyote/fox hunting going on where SkinsFan is hunting too. Makes sense.... Wanna hear a awful story? I was digging into what I thought was a hut site and ended up digging this (photo below) I thought for about 10 seconds I dug something like a V (virginia buckle) with that V on it. About 20 seconds into the find it dawned on me it was a freaking Victor game trap! Boy I hate those things.
